# Chalkboard White & Deep-Navy Service Sheet

A design language for crisp, uncompromising hospitality and service interfaces that favor stark contrast and honest structure over nostalgic clichés.

---

## Philosophy

> "Character stems from stark contrast and absolute clarity, not from dust and doodles."

This system creates interfaces that feel like a pristine, high-end neighborhood institution. It balances the tactile memory of a beautifully maintained chalkboard with the modern rigor of a digital layout. The design relies on crisp boundaries, sharp corners, and elegant serif typography set against deeply saturated navy and clean white canvases.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Character through contrast** — Deep, saturated navies and slates cutting sharply across stark white canvases build an inherently confident aesthetic.
2. **Structure over ornament** — Specials, menus, and services are presented in strict, ruled rows. We use grids and lines, not fake chalk textures or hand-drawn borders.
3. **Exact hierarchy** — Scale, alignment, and definitive borders do the heavy lifting. The eye should seamlessly track from elegant headings down to highly legible, practical details.
4. **The Accent is an anchor** — Deep navy grounds the interface like fresh enamel paint on a shop sign. It signifies intent and permanence.
5. **Utilitarian elegance** — Components like location blocks and image strips must remain purely functional, cleanly framed, and free of unnecessary interface polish.

### Strict Rules

* **Square Corners Only** — All CTAs, images, and panels must have zero border-radius. No pill buttons, no soft edges.
* **Light Horizontal Navbar** — Navigation must sit on a `w3-white` or `w3-light-grey` strip at the top. Never dark heavy headers.
* **Centered Hero, Compact Intro** — The initial view must instantly orient the user with center-aligned primary headings, followed immediately by concise, compactly boxed information.
* **No Faux Vintage** — Refuse dusty textures, beige paper backgrounds, childish chalk fonts, or hand-drawn icon packs.
* **No Parallax** — Scrolling is physical and direct. Backgrounds stay firmly anchored.
* **No App Polish** — Avoid heavy drop shadows, neon gradients, or glassmorphism.

## Color Palette

### The Canvas, Slate, & Enamel Scale

The palette rejects "vintage beige" entirely, opting instead for pure whites and pale architectural blues to act as the canvas. Text is rendered in slate and graphite to soften the reading experience slightly compared to pure black, while the primary accent is a striking, deep navy.

```css
/* Backgrounds (The Canvas) */
w3-white              /* Primary background, hero sections, core panels (#ffffff) */
w3-light-grey         /* Secondary panels, subtle separation blocks (#f1f1f1) */
w3-pale-blue          /* Tertiary highlight zones, featured item backgrounds (#e8ebf5) */
/* Borders & Dividers (Graphite) */
w3-border-light-grey  /* Standard structural borders */
w3-border-grey        /* Ruled rows, distinct tabular data dividers */
w3-border-dark-grey   /* High-contrast structural framing, image borders */
/* Typography (Slate) */
w3-text-black         /* Only used for the most crucial hero statistics */
w3-text-dark-grey     /* Slate: Primary text, body copy, descriptions (#333333) */
w3-text-grey          /* Metadata, location details, opening hours */
/* The Enamel: Deep Navy (Accent) */
w3-text-indigo        /* Mapped to deep navy: critical links, precise highlights (#1a2530) */
bg-deep-navy          /* Custom CTA background, hand-painted sign feel (#0f172a) */
border-deep-navy      /* Sharp, thick borders for primary active states */
/* The Star: Golden Yellow */
w3-text-amber         /* Exclusively reserved for review stars and elite badges (#ffc107) */
```

### Destructive/Warning Actions

```css
w3-pale-red w3-border-red w3-text-red /* Kept strict and square for alerts only */
```

---

## Typography

The typography system pairs elegant, traditional serifs for structural headings with unpretentious, utilitarian sans-serifs for body copy.

### Typefaces

* **Headings:** Georgia, Charter, or Source Serif 4. (Elegant, bookish, structural).
* **Body:** Gill Sans, PT Sans, or Noto Sans. (Crisp, practical, highly legible).

### Font Weights

```css
/* W3 CSS relies on standard bolding; we apply these strictly via custom classes if needed */
font-normal      /* Standard body copy, all paragraphs, opening hours */
font-medium      /* Navigation links, button labels */
font-semibold    /* Item names in ruled lists, sub-headers */
/* Bold is strictly limited to total price lines or critical location markers */
```

### Font Size Scale (W3 CSS Standards)

```css
w3-tiny          /* Fine print, copyright info */
w3-small         /* Metadata, standard table rows, location tags */
w3-medium        /* Core body copy, instructional paragraphs */
w3-large         /* Intro summaries, standard component headers */
w3-xlarge        /* Secondary section titles */
w3-xxlarge       /* Primary section identifiers */
w3-jumbo         /* Centered Hero titles only */
```

### Hierarchy Examples

| Element | Size | Font Family | Color | Treatment |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hero Heading | `w3-jumbo` | Serif | Deep Navy / Black | Centered, tight spacing |
| Section Titles | `w3-xxlarge` | Serif | `w3-text-dark-grey` | Bottom-bordered |
| Menu/Specials Item | `w3-large` | Sans-Serif | `w3-text-dark-grey` | `w3-border-bottom` row |
| Standard Body | `w3-medium` | Sans-Serif | `w3-text-dark-grey` | Normal flow |
| CTA Buttons | `w3-medium` | Sans-Serif | `w3-white` | Uppercase, Square corners |

## Animation System

### Core Philosophy: The Honest Reveal

Motion is entirely stripped back. There is no spatial distortion, no spring-physics, and no parallax scrolling. Elements simply appear with quiet confidence.

### Page Transitions & Reveals

Elements fade in purely through opacity.

```css
/* W3 standard opacity animations */
w3-animate-opacity    /* Immediate, crisp fade-in for page loads */
w3-animate-fading     /* Looping fades for exceptionally rare image carousels */
```

### Hover States (The Enamel Snap)

Interactions do not scale or blur. They instantly invert or aggressively shift color to simulate a definitive state change.

```css
/* Instant background swap on hover */
w3-hover-dark-grey
w3-hover-text-white
/* No transitions on box-shadow; strict color swaps only */
```

## UI Components

### The Ruled Specials Board

A signature component. Rejects chalkboard doodles entirely in favor of strict, accounting-style ruled rows.

```html
<div class="w3-container w3-white w3-border w3-border-dark-grey w3-margin-bottom">
  <div class="w3-row w3-border-bottom w3-border-grey w3-padding-16">
    <div class="w3-col s9 w3-large font-semibold">House Pressed Coffee</div>
    <div class="w3-col s3 w3-right-align font-medium w3-text-dark-grey">£3.50</div>
  </div>
  <div class="w3-row w3-border-bottom w3-border-grey w3-padding-16">
    <div class="w3-col s9 w3-large font-semibold">Sourdough & Slate Butter</div>
    <div class="w3-col s3 w3-right-align font-medium w3-text-dark-grey">£5.00</div>
  </div>
</div>
```

### Two-Column Image Strip

Imagery (rainlit pavements, chrome counters, enamel signs) is presented in rigid grids, not scattered polaroids.

```html
<div class="w3-row-padding w3-margin-top">
  <div class="w3-half">
    <img src="chrome-counter.jpg" class="w3-image w3-border w3-border-dark-grey" alt="Chrome Counter" style="width:100%; border-radius:0;">
  </div>
  <div class="w3-half">
    <img src="enamel-sign.jpg" class="w3-image w3-border w3-border-dark-grey" alt="Enamel Sign" style="width:100%; border-radius:0;">
  </div>
</div>
```

### Location & Hours Block

Information must be highly scannable, using clear grids and prominent, easy-to-read sizing.

```html
<div class="w3-panel w3-pale-blue w3-border w3-border-dark-grey w3-padding-24">
  <h3 class="serif-heading w3-xlarge w3-margin-bottom">Find Us</h3>
  <p class="w3-medium w3-text-dark-grey">142 Enamel Row, Slate District</p>
  <hr class="w3-border-grey">
  <p class="w3-small w3-text-dark-grey w3-opacity">MON - FRI : 07:00 — 16:00</p>
  <p class="w3-small w3-text-dark-grey w3-opacity">SAT - SUN : 08:00 — 15:00</p>
</div>
```

---

## Component Catalog

### Buttons

Strictly square corners. Solid, confident colors. No bright, tech-app blues.

```html
<!-- Primary CTA (Deep Navy) -->
<button class="w3-button bg-deep-navy w3-text-white w3-hover-dark-grey w3-padding-large" style="border-radius: 0;">
  BOOK A TABLE
</button>
<!-- Secondary CTA (Outline) -->
<button class="w3-button w3-white w3-border w3-border-dark-grey w3-hover-light-grey w3-padding-large" style="border-radius: 0;">
  VIEW FULL MENU
</button>
```

### Cards & Panels

No drop shadows. Definition comes exclusively from `w3-border`.

```html
<!-- Standard Information Panel -->
<div class="w3-panel w3-white w3-border w3-border-light-grey w3-padding-16">
  <h4 class="w3-large serif-heading">Our Sourcing</h4>
  <p class="w3-medium w3-text-dark-grey">Local ingredients, delivered daily at dawn.</p>
</div>
```

### Reviews / Ratings

The only permitted use of bright color (`w3-text-amber`).

```html
<div class="w3-container w3-padding">
  <span class="w3-text-amber w3-large">★★★★★</span>
  <span class="w3-text-dark-grey w3-small w3-margin-left">Local Guide</span>
</div>
```

## Quality Checklist

* [ ] Is the navbar firmly `w3-white` or `w3-light-grey` instead of a heavy dark header?
* [ ] Is the hero text centered and instantly legible?
* [ ] Do all buttons and containers have sharp, square corners (no border-radius)?
* [ ] Is the specials section constructed with ruled rows instead of floating text or doodles?
* [ ] Are the heading typefaces serif and the body typefaces sans-serif?
* [ ] Is the primary interactive color a deep navy rather than a bright "tech" blue?
* [ ] Did you avoid all drop shadows in favor of 1px solid structural borders?
* [ ] Is motion restricted strictly to opacity fades?
