# Chalk-White Ledger & Cornflower Counter Ink

A design language for honest, highly structured, and tactile culinary and editorial interfaces.

## Philosophy

> "Trust comes from alignment, good tables, and practical presentation."

This system creates interfaces that feel like a meticulously maintained ledger or an elegant, understated printed menu. It acts as a restrained book-designer layout prioritizing raw structural integrity over decorative flair. The design feels grounded and utilitarian, relying on crisp columns, pencil-thin dividers, and honest utility to build confidence.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Trust through alignment** — Every element must adhere to a strict, visible grid. Strong left edges anchor the layout immediately after the hero section.
2. **The power of good tables** — Data and pricing are presented in immaculate, easily scannable tabular formats. Alignment of names and prices is non-negotiable.
3. **Practical content over flair** — We use compact, reusable blocks. There are no expansive "showroom gaps" or gratuitous whitespace—information density is respected and carefully managed.
4. **Honest photography** — Imagery must reflect physical, tactile reality. Focus on folded menus, white plates, cake stands, and receipt paper.

### Strict Rules

* **Narrow Viewports** — The main content wrapper must remain narrow and highly readable, resisting the urge to stretch across ultra-wide displays.
* **Short Heroes** — Hero sections are brief, authoritative, and direct. The review count must sit adjacent to the primary headline.
* **Two Flat CTAs** — Actions are limited to two flat, unembellished call-to-action buttons. No gradients, no heavy shadows.
* **Plain Utility Areas** — Address and hours areas must be strictly informational, utilizing plain text alignments devoid of map-box clichés or heavy iconography.

## Color Palette

### The Ledger Scale & Counter Ink

The palette is rooted in a chalk-white canvas, structured by cool newspaper-greys, and drawn together with charcoal typography. The accents are highly specific: a printed-mark cornflower blue and a golden yellow reserved solely for review metrics.

```css
/* W3.CSS Theme Overrides & Custom Palette */
/* Backgrounds */
.w3-chalk-white    { background-color: #FAFAFA !important; } /* Core canvas */
.w3-newspaper-grey { background-color: #E8EAEB !important; } /* Cool secondary blocks */
.w3-receipt-grey   { background-color: #F4F4F5 !important; } /* Subtle row highlights */
/* Borders (The Pencil Dividers) */
.w3-border-pencil  { border-color: #D1D5DB !important; } /* Divider lines, table borders */
.w3-border-charcoal{ border-color: #374151 !important; } /* Active/focus borders */
/* Typography (Charcoal Copy) */
.w3-text-charcoal  { color: #27272A !important; } /* Primary text, headings */
.w3-text-slate     { color: #52525B !important; } /* Secondary text, descriptions */
.w3-text-graphite  { color: #71717A !important; } /* Metadata, hours of operation */
/* The Printed Mark: Cornflower Blue */
.w3-text-cornflower { color: #6495ED !important; } /* Links, primary ink accents */
.w3-cornflower      { background-color: #6495ED !important; color: #fff !important; }
.w3-border-cornflower { border-color: #6495ED !important; }
/* The Metric: Golden Yellow */
.w3-text-golden    { color: #FFC107 !important; } /* Star ratings ONLY */
```

### Common Mistakes to Avoid
* **Generic Navy:** Do not replace Cornflower with corporate navy blue.
* **Weak Greys:** Greys must lean cool (newspaper) rather than warm (beige/muddy).
* **Fake Vintage:** Do not use textured backgrounds, noise overlays, or sepia tones.

## Typography

Familiarity breeds usability. Typography follows a strict 2015-era digital familiarity, but executed with absolute book-designer discipline.

### Approved Pairings
Choose one pairing and stick to it strictly across the entire application:
1. **Karla** (Headings) with **Open Sans** (Body)
2. **Lato** (Headings) with **PT Sans** (Body)
3. **Droid Sans** (Headings) with **Noto Sans** (Body)

### Font Weights

```css
/* Using standard CSS with W3 classes */
.font-normal   /* Core body copy, tables, addresses (400) */
.font-medium   /* CTAs, menu item names, secondary headers (500) */
.font-bold     /* Primary headlines, total prices, review counts (700) */
/* Light and Black weights are generally avoided to maintain a practical, ledger-like feel */
```

### Font Size Scale (Mapped to W3.CSS)

```css
.w3-tiny       /* 10px - Micro legal text, receipt footnotes */
.w3-small      /* 12px - Operating hours, metadata, secondary prices */
.w3-medium     /* 15px - Default body copy, menu descriptions */
.w3-large      /* 18px - Menu row headers, sub-navigation */
.w3-xlarge     /* 24px - Section headers (e.g., "Mains", "Starters") */
.w3-xxlarge    /* 36px - Short hero headlines */
```

### Hierarchy Examples

| Element | W3 Size | Weight | Color | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hero Headline | `w3-xxlarge` | bold | charcoal | Keep it short; align left |
| Review Count | `w3-medium` | medium | slate | Placed immediately near headline |
| Menu Item Name| `w3-large` | medium | charcoal | Aligned perfectly in table cell |
| Menu Price | `w3-large` | normal | charcoal | Right-aligned in table cell |
| Descriptions | `w3-medium` | normal | slate | Compact blocks, minimal gap |

## Animation System

### Core Philosophy: Nearly Static

Motion should be virtually non-existent. The system mimics physical paper ledgers and printed menus. State changes happen instantly or with the most utilitarian of fades. No spring physics, no sweeping reveals.

### State Transitions

```css
/* W3 hover transition override */
.w3-transition-fast {
  transition: background-color 0.1s ease-in, color 0.1s ease-in;
}
/* Tab/Menu switching - Instant swap */
.ledger-swap {
  animation: none; /* Explicitly overriding any fade-in utilities */
}
```

## UI Components

### The Light MVP Navbar

A highly restrained, top-aligned navigation bar. No sticky shrinking, no deep shadows. Just a chalk-white bar with a pencil divider at the bottom.

```html
<div class="w3-bar w3-chalk-white w3-border-bottom w3-border-pencil w3-padding-16">
  <div class="w3-content" style="max-width:960px">
    <a href="#" class="w3-bar-item w3-button w3-hover-none w3-text-charcoal font-bold">Logo</a>
    <a href="#" class="w3-bar-item w3-button w3-hover-none w3-text-cornflower w3-right">Order Now</a>
  </div>
</div>
```

### The Aligned Menu Row

The cornerstone of the system. Relies on strict left/right alignment, connected by a subtle pencil border. No misaligned columns are permitted.

```html
<div class="w3-row w3-border-bottom w3-border-pencil w3-padding-16 w3-hover-light-grey w3-transition-fast">
  <div class="w3-col s10">
    <div class="w3-large font-medium w3-text-charcoal">Roast Chicken & Root Vegetables</div>
    <div class="w3-medium w3-text-slate w3-margin-top">Half chicken, heirloom carrots, pan jus.</div>
  </div>
  <div class="w3-col s2 w3-right-align">
    <span class="w3-large w3-text-charcoal">$24</span>
  </div>
</div>
```

### Plain Address & Hours Area

Utilitarian data presentation. No interactive maps, no decorative icons. Just strong left-alignment in a newspaper-grey block.

```html
<div class="w3-panel w3-newspaper-grey w3-padding-24 w3-border w3-border-pencil">
  <p class="w3-medium font-bold w3-text-charcoal w3-margin-0">Location & Hours</p>
  <p class="w3-small w3-text-slate w3-margin-top">
    123 Ledger Street<br>
    New York, NY 10001
  </p>
  <table class="w3-table w3-small w3-text-slate" style="width: auto;">
    <tr><td style="padding-left:0;">Mon-Fri</td><td>8:00 AM - 9:00 PM</td></tr>
    <tr><td style="padding-left:0;">Sat-Sun</td><td>9:00 AM - 10:00 PM</td></tr>
  </table>
</div>
```

## Component Catalog

### Hero Wrapper (Short & Narrow)

```html
<div class="w3-content w3-padding-64" style="max-width: 720px;">
  <h1 class="w3-xxlarge font-bold w3-text-charcoal w3-margin-0">The Morning Counter</h1>
  <div class="w3-margin-top">
    <span class="w3-text-golden w3-large">★★★★★</span>
    <span class="w3-text-slate w3-medium w3-margin-left">1,204 Reviews</span>
  </div>
</div>
```

### Two Flat CTAs

```html
<!-- Primary CTA (Cornflower Ink) -->
<button class="w3-button w3-cornflower w3-padding-large font-medium">
  Reserve a Table
</button>
<!-- Secondary CTA (Chalk-White Outline) -->
</button>
```

### Imagery Containers

Images must be raw, image-heavy in the midsection, and devoid of rounded corners, frames, or decorative borders.

```html
<!-- Full bleed within the narrow wrapper -->
<img src="white-plates.jpg" class="w3-image w3-margin-bottom" style="width:100%" alt="White plates on a table">
```

## Quality Checklist

* [ ] Is the main content wrapper strictly narrow (e.g., `max-width: 720px` to `960px`)?
* [ ] Does the navbar look like a raw HTML/MVP.css navbar, utilizing basic W3.css classes without heavy styling?
* [ ] Are the review stars exactly golden yellow and placed adjacent to the short hero headline?
* [ ] Are the menu columns flawlessly aligned with a strong left edge and right-aligned pricing?
* [ ] Are all dividers rendered as 1px solid pencil-grey (`#D1D5DB`)?
* [ ] Is the imagery authentic (white plates, folded menus, receipt paper)?
* [ ] Are the CTAs completely flat with zero box-shadow?
