# Frosted Diary Graphite & Lipstick-Red Café Register

A design language for tactile, restrained, and highly structured digital environments, evoking the intimacy of a black-leather diary and the precision of a high-end café register.

## Philosophy

> "Elegance comes from restraint, strict alignment, and readable proof."

This system explores a close-family sans-serif aesthetic. It rejects the overly airy, inflated layouts of the modern web in favor of a compact 2015 builder rhythm. Interfaces feel like crisp frost-white pages layered with pale graphite-grey panels, bound by nickel hairlines and inscribed with blue-black ink. Visuals rely on precise image sequencing—evoking black leather, printed receipts, rainlit glass, and a single trace of red lipstick.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Restraint is luxury** — Impact is achieved by what is withheld.
2. **Alignment creates structure** — Every element adheres to a rigid, predictable grid with aligned gutters and consistent row heights.
3. **Readable proof over decoration** — Content is treated like an immutable receipt. It is factual, clearly presented, and unembellished.
4. **Image sequencing sets the mood** — Imagery drives the narrative, stepping in where UI elements step back.

### Strict Rules

* **No Badges or Avatars** — Status and identity are communicated purely through unboxed typography.
* **No Icons** — Interface actions rely exclusively on explicit text labels and clear typographic hierarchy.
* **No Beige** — Warm, muddy tones are strictly forbidden. The canvas is frost-white or pale graphite.
* **Capped Typography** — The maximum heading size is explicitly limited to `3xl` (`is-size-3` in Bulma). Oversized type breaks the diary scale.
* **Single High-Contrast Accent** — Lacquered lipstick-red is reserved strictly for Calls to Action (CTAs), active navigation states, and exactly one proof line per view.

## Color Palette

### Base Scale & The Lipstick Accent

The palette is cool, stark, and highly legible, contrasting frost-white paper with deep ink tones. Bulma CSS variables are re-mapped to this precise spectrum.

```css
/* Backgrounds */
--color-frost-white: #fdfdfd;       /* Main canvas background, primary pages */
--color-graphite-pale: #f0f0f4;     /* Secondary panels, practical three-column blocks */
--color-graphite-mid: #d8d8de;      /* Hover states on structural panels */
/* Structural Borders */
--color-nickel-hairline: #c4c4c9;   /* Table-like menu row dividers, subtle gutters */
--color-nickel-heavy: #a3a3a9;      /* Focused inputs, active structural delineations */
/* Typographic Ink */
--color-ink-blue-black: #0c111a;    /* Primary text, hero headings, menu items */
--color-ink-muted: #5a606e;         /* Plain location details, secondary copy */
--color-ink-faint: #8e95a5;         /* Metadata, table headers, review count statements */
/* The Accents */
--color-lipstick-red: #c8102e;      /* Exclusive to CTAs, active nav, and one proof line */
--color-lipstick-hover: #a10d25;    /* Button hover states */
--color-golden-yellow: #f5c518;     /* Exclusively for immediate star ratings */
```

## Typography

The typographic system rejects default Inter-only sameness. It relies on a carefully paired, close-family sans-serif relationship that balances editorial authority with utilitarian legibility.

### Font Families

```css
/* Headings: Structural, architectural, slightly mechanical */
--font-heading: 'Work Sans', 'IBM Plex Sans', sans-serif; /* Or Founders Grotesk */
/* Body: Clean, highly readable, humanist touches */
--font-body: 'Source Sans 3', 'Karla', 'Assistant', sans-serif;
```

### Font Size Scale (Bulma Equivalents)

```css
/* Capped Hero Heading */
.is-size-3       /* Max size allowed. Hero headings only. (approx 2rem) */
/* Core Interface */
.is-size-4       /* Major section headers */
.is-size-5       /* Sub-headers, prominent menu row titles */
.is-size-6       /* Base body copy, plain location details (16px) */
.is-size-7       /* Review-count statements, fine print (14px) */
```

### Hierarchy Examples

| Element | Bulma Class | Family | Color | Characteristics |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hero Heading | `is-size-3` | Heading | `--color-ink-blue-black` | Max size, tight tracking |
| Active Nav | `is-size-6` | Body | `--color-lipstick-red` | Fades on hover |
| Location Details| `is-size-6` | Body | `--color-ink-muted` | Standard leading |
| Menu Rows | `is-size-5` | Heading | `--color-ink-blue-black` | Table-like, unadorned |
| Proof Line | `is-size-7` | Body | `--color-lipstick-red` | Precise, aligned right |

## Animation System

### Core Philosophy: Fades and Underlines

Motion is almost nonexistent. The system mimics the analog turning of a page. There are no springs, scaling, or translations.

### Interactions

```css
/* Fades: Used for image loading and panel state changes */
.fade-transition {
  transition: opacity 0.2s ease-in-out;
}
.fade-transition:hover {
  opacity: 0.8;
}
/* Underline Hovers: The ONLY text interaction */
.nav-link {
  text-decoration: none;
  transition: text-decoration-color 0.15s ease;
  text-decoration-color: transparent;
  text-underline-offset: 4px;
}
.nav-link:hover {
  text-decoration: underline;
  text-decoration-color: var(--color-ink-blue-black);
}
/* Active Nav uses the Lipstick Red */
.nav-link.is-active {
  color: var(--color-lipstick-red);
  text-decoration: underline;
  text-decoration-color: var(--color-lipstick-red);
}
```

## Layout Rules & Spacing

Embraces a **compact 2015 builder rhythm**. Elements are packed closely but structured through rigorous, aligned gutters and consistent row heights.

```html
<!-- Bulma Compact Gutters -->
<div class="columns is-variable is-2">
  <div class="column">
    <!-- Tightly packed content -->
  </div>
</div>
```

---

## UI Components

### Slim Light Navbar

A razor-thin navigation bar that blends effortlessly into the frost-white canvas, delineated only by a nickel hairline.

```html
<nav class="navbar is-transparent border-bottom-hairline" style="min-height: 40px;">
  <div class="navbar-brand">
    <span class="navbar-item is-size-6 has-text-weight-bold has-text-ink-blue-black">
      BrandMark
    </span>
  </div>
  <div class="navbar-menu">
    <div class="navbar-end">
      <a class="navbar-item nav-link is-active">Journal</a>
      <a class="navbar-item nav-link">Archive</a>
    </div>
  </div>
</nav>
```

### Image-Led Hero (Capped at 3xl)

Visuals dominate the top of the hierarchy. Hero text is intentionally restrained to `.is-size-3`.

```html
<section class="hero is-small has-background-frost-white">
  <div class="hero-body p-0">
    <!-- Image Sequencing Focus -->
    <figure class="image is-3by1 mb-4 fade-transition">
      <img src="rainlit-glass.jpg" alt="Rain on café window" />
    </figure>
    <div class="is-flex is-justify-content-space-between is-align-items-flex-start mt-4">
      <h1 class="title is-size-3 has-text-weight-normal heading-font has-text-ink-blue-black">
        Midnight Register
      </h1>
      <!-- Immediate Star Rating -->
      <div class="rating has-text-right">
        <span class="has-text-golden-yellow">★★★★★</span>
      </div>
    </div>
    <!-- Centered Review-Count Statement -->
    <p class="has-text-centered is-size-7 has-text-ink-muted mt-5">
      Based on 142 documented receipts.
    </p>
  </div>
</section>
```

### Table-Like Menu Rows

Used for displaying data, articles, or lists. Strictly separated by nickel hairlines with plain location details acting as metadata.

```html
<div class="menu-table mt-5">
  <!-- Row Item -->
  <div class="is-flex is-justify-content-space-between is-align-items-center py-3 border-bottom-hairline nav-link-container">
    <div>
      <h3 class="is-size-5 heading-font has-text-ink-blue-black m-0">Espresso & Rain</h3>
      <p class="is-size-7 body-font has-text-ink-muted m-0">Plain Location: 4th Ave, Booth 2</p>
    </div>
    <!-- The One Proof Line -->
    <div class="is-size-7 has-text-lipstick-red has-text-right">
      Verified 04:12 AM
    </div>
  </div>
</div>
```

### Practical Three-Column Block

For structured information display, utilizing the tight 2015 grid rhythm.

```html
<div class="columns is-variable is-2 mt-4">
  <div class="column is-4">
    <div class="box has-background-graphite-pale is-shadowless border-hairline is-radiusless p-4">
      <h4 class="is-size-6 heading-font">Receipt No. 01</h4>
      <p class="is-size-7 body-font mt-2">Black leather binding, unlined pages.</p>
    </div>
  </div>
  <!-- Additional columns repeat -->
</div>
```

---

## Component Catalog

### Call to Action (CTA) Buttons

Only primary actions are granted the lacquered lipstick-red. They are flat, square, and completely devoid of shadows or rounded corners.

```html
<!-- Primary CTA -->
<button class="button is-radiusless has-background-lipstick-red has-text-white border-none fade-transition px-5">
  Confirm Entry
</button>
<!-- Secondary Action (Text Only, Underline Hover) -->
<button class="button is-ghost is-radiusless has-text-ink-blue-black nav-link px-0">
  Cancel
</button>
```

### Plain Location Details

Text-only coordinate or address mapping. No pin icons.

```html
<div class="location-details mt-2">
  <span class="is-size-6 has-text-ink-blue-black heading-font">Café Register 04</span>
  <br />
  <span class="is-size-7 has-text-ink-muted body-font">1204 Graphite Way, NY</span>
</div>
```

## Quality Checklist

* [ ] Is the hero heading strictly capped at `is-size-3` or smaller?
* [ ] Has all beige coloring been completely purged from the layout?
* [ ] Are there zero icons and zero avatars present on the screen?
* [ ] Do interactive elements rely exclusively on simple fades or underline hovers?
* [ ] Is the "Lacquered Lipstick-Red" used *only* for CTAs, active nav items, and a single proof line per view?
* [ ] Do data sets and menus use the flat, unadorned Table-Like Row structure with nickel hairlines?
* [ ] Is the typography combining a structural heading font (e.g., Work Sans) with a humanist/clean body font (e.g., Source Sans 3)?
