# Iced Blue Till Paper & Naval Ink Review Ledger

A design language for restrained, editorial-grade interfaces emphasizing printed permanence, neat structural grids, and functional clarity.

---

## Philosophy

> "Refinement comes from restraint; typography should feel printed, not branded."

This system rejects the overly polished, warm, and hyper-modern aesthetics of contemporary web design. Instead, it embraces an "old website-builder consistency"—structural, reliable, and firmly grounded. It feels like a high-quality physical receipt or a meticulously kept accounting ledger on a stainless steel counter.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Printed, Not Branded** — Interfaces should read like a physical publication. Typography is king, relying on classic, recognizable faces rather than trendy geometric sans-serifs.
2. **Neat Tables over Flowing Grids** — Information belongs in highly structured, rigidly aligned rows and columns. Alignment is absolute.
3. **Photographic Cadence** — Imagery isn't background decoration; it operates in distinct editorial bands that break up the starkness of the till-paper surfaces.
4. **Decisive Action** — Interactive elements are sparse. When an action is required, it is marked by a severe, unapologetic naval-blue.
5. **No Showroom Gaps** — Spacing relies on functional consistency rather than airy, luxurious, empty "showroom" gaps. Everything has a firm left edge.

### Strict Rules

* **Light Navbar Only** — Navigation must remain tethered to the white/pale-blue surface aesthetic.
* **Restrained Headlines** — Headlines must be centered, utilizing a restrained serif weight. Heavy, blocky bolds are forbidden.
* **Visible Social Proof & Brief Paragraphs** — Content must get straight to the point, immediately backed by tangible review data (golden stars).
* **Two CTAs Maximum** — Decision fatigue is eliminated through strict choice architecture.
* **Aligned Pricing** — Menu and pricing rows must have perfectly aligned decimal points/prices.
* **Practical Final CTA** — The footer or bottom section must resolve with a highly practical, unambiguous call to action.

## Color Palette

Built strictly on the **W3.CSS framework**, the palette mimics the cool, sterile, yet highly professional environment of a high-end kitchen's back office or a tailor's ledger.

### Core Surfaces & Accents

```css
/* W3.CSS Standard Classes & Custom System Extensions */
/* Surfaces */
w3-white              /* "Till-paper" background. The foundational canvas. */
w3-pale-blue          /* "Icy trays" for alternating rows, sidebars, or isolated cards. */
/* Borders & Structure */
w3-border-blue-grey   /* Standard border color for all tables, neat lines, and dividers. */
/* Typography */
w3-text-dark-grey     /* "Soft charcoal" — Mandatory for all body copy (never pure black). */
w3-text-black         /* Reserved strictly for serif headlines to mimic wet ink. */
/* The Decisive Accent */
w3-naval-blue         /* Custom extension (#0B1D3A). Severe, strictly for primary CTAs. */
w3-text-naval-blue    /* Text-only variant for secondary decisive links. */
/* Specific UI Elements */
w3-text-amber         /* "Golden yellow" — Reserved exclusively for social proof stars. */
```

### Destructive Actions

```css
/* W3 Standard */
w3-red
w3-text-red
w3-border-red
```

---

## Typography

Typography abandons modern geometric trends, opting instead for timeless, highly legible fonts that evoke ink on paper.

### Font Families

```css
/* Headings (Choose one system-wide) */
font-family: 'Times New Roman', Times, serif;
font-family: 'Tinos', serif;
font-family: 'Domine', serif;
/* Supporting Text & Body (Choose one system-wide) */
font-family: 'Source Sans 3', sans-serif;
font-family: 'Cabin', sans-serif;
font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif;
```

### Typographic Rules & Scale

Body copy must be substantially sized with generous breathing room between lines to ensure extended reading comfort, contrasting with the tighter structural elements.

```css
/* Base Body (Strictly Enforced) */
font-size: 17px;       /* Absolute minimum size for all supporting text */
line-height: 1.7;      /* Generous leading for all paragraph blocks */
/* Font Weights */
font-weight: 400;      /* Standard body text */
font-weight: 500;      /* Restrained serif weight for centered headlines */
/* Heavy, thick bold weights (700+) are strictly prohibited in headlines */
```

### Hierarchy Examples

| Element | Family | Size | Weight | Color (W3) | Alignment |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Main Headline | Serif | 36px | 500 (Restrained) | w3-text-black | Centered |
| Body Paragraph | Sans-serif | 17px+ | 400 | w3-text-dark-grey | Strong Left Edge |
| Menu Item | Sans-serif | 17px | 400 | w3-text-black | Left |
| Menu Price | Sans-serif | 17px | 400 | w3-text-dark-grey | Right-Aligned |
| Final CTA | Sans-serif | 18px | 500 | w3-white (on Naval) | Centered |

## Spacing & Alignment Philosophy

### Strong Left Edges
Text and content blocks do not float in the center of the page (except for specific, restrained headlines). Content must anchor to a strong left edge, creating a rigid vertical line that guides the eye down the ledger.

### No Showroom Gaps
Avoid modern, ultra-airy paddings. Use traditional, consistent spacing reminiscent of classic web builders. Elements should feel structurally grouped, not isolated in massive fields of white space.

```css
/* Standard W3 Spacing Classes Utilized */
w3-padding-16      /* Standard component internal padding */
w3-padding-32      /* Section breaks (No larger gaps permitted) */
w3-margin-bottom   /* Standard block spacing */
```

---

## Animation System

### Core Philosophy: The Slow Fade
Motion is almost entirely eliminated to preserve the "printed" illusion. When state changes must occur, they happen via slow, deliberate opacity fades. No scaling, no bouncing, no sliding.

### State Transitions

```css
/* Global Transition Rule */
transition: opacity 0.6s ease-in-out;
/* Interactive States */
.w3-hover-opacity /* Applied to photo bands and non-decisive links */
```

## Component Catalog

### Structural Surfaces (The Icy Tray & Till Paper)

Containers utilize a flat design with crisp blue-grey borders. No drop shadows.

```html
<!-- Icy Tray Container -->
<div class="w3-container w3-pale-blue w3-border w3-border-blue-grey w3-padding-16">
  <h2 class="w3-center w3-text-black" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-weight: 500;">
    Restrained Centered Headline
  </h2>
  <p class="w3-text-dark-grey" style="font-size: 17px; line-height: 1.7;">
    Brief paragraph anchoring to the left. No rambling text.
  </p>
</div>
```

### Decisive Actions (CTAs)

Only two CTAs should exist in a primary view. Action buttons use severe naval-blue with no gradients or rounded pills (slight border-radius is acceptable, but sharp corners are preferred).

```html
<!-- Primary Decisive Action -->
<button class="w3-button w3-naval-blue w3-padding-16 w3-block" style="max-width: 300px;">
  PRACTICAL FINAL CTA
</button>
<!-- Secondary Action -->
<button class="w3-button w3-white w3-border w3-border-blue-grey w3-text-black w3-padding-16">
  Secondary Action
</button>
```

### Neat Menu & Pricing Rows

Data must be perfectly aligned. Prices sit flush right.

```html
<!-- Ledger Pricing Row -->
<div class="w3-row w3-border-bottom w3-border-blue-grey w3-padding-16">
  <div class="w3-col s9 w3-text-black" style="font-size: 17px;">
    Specific Ledger Item
  </div>
  <div class="w3-col s3 w3-right-align w3-text-dark-grey" style="font-size: 17px;">
    $142.00
  </div>
</div>
```

### Social Proof Band

Visible, undeniable proof utilizing the golden yellow star motif.

```html
<div class="w3-container w3-white w3-padding-16 w3-center w3-border-top w3-border-bottom w3-border-blue-grey">
  <span class="w3-text-amber w3-large">★★★★★</span>
  <p class="w3-text-dark-grey" style="font-size: 17px; margin-top: 8px;">
    Verified structural integrity.
  </p>
</div>
```

---

## Imagery & Media

Imagery is treated as editorial photography—bands of visual context that span the grid, breaking up the text with stark realism.

**Required Photographic Subjects:**
* Blue china plates
* Paper receipt rolls
* Crisp window reflections
* White tablecloths
* Stainless steel counters

**Strict Imagery Rules:**
* Must sit edge-to-edge within their structural columns/containers (Editorial Photo Bands).
* Colors must be cool-toned, echoing the icy w3-pale-blue and naval ink.

```html
<!-- Editorial Photo Band -->
<div class="w3-row">
  <img src="stainless-counter.jpg" class="w3-image w3-border-top w3-border-bottom w3-border-blue-grey" alt="Stainless counter reflection" style="width:100%; opacity: 0.9; transition: opacity 0.6s;">
</div>
```

---

## Quality Checklist

* [ ] Is the body copy strictly set to a minimum of 17px with generous leading?
* [ ] Do all tables and containers use `w3-border-blue-grey` for dividing lines?
* [ ] Are the headlines centered and utilizing a restrained (non-heavy) serif weight?
* [ ] Is the primary CTA rendered in severe naval-blue?
* [ ] Are there a maximum of two CTAs in the primary view?
* [ ] Do pricing/menu rows have completely aligned, flush-right numbers?
* [ ] Is the left edge of all paragraph content strictly aligned?
* [ ] Are hover effects restricted purely to slow fades?

## Allowed vs Not Allowed

### ✓ Allowed
* `w3-white` and `w3-pale-blue` core surfaces.
* Soft charcoal (`w3-text-dark-grey`) for legible, non-harsh body copy.
* Golden yellow specifically and exclusively for review stars.
* Crisp, structural layouts reminiscent of old website-builder constraints.
* Tangible, mundane luxury imagery (receipts, white tablecloths, steel).

### ✗ Not Allowed
* **Nautical Themes:** Despite the "naval-blue", absolutely no anchors, ropes, or sea motifs.
* **Gradients:** All surfaces and buttons must be completely flat.
* **Avatars & Badges:** Human face bubbles and UI badges clutter the ledger aesthetic. Remove them.
* **Beige Warmth:** No cream, sand, or warm off-whites. The palette must remain icy and severe.
* **Decorative Dividers:** No flourishes, squiggles, or dots. Use pure `w3-border-blue-grey` lines.
* **Weak Contrast:** Avoid light-grey text on white. Ensure charcoal text is highly legible.
* **Generic Template Navy:** Do not use washed-out, generic web-safe blues. Use the severe, near-black naval blue.
* **Over-Polished Restaurant Styling:** Refuse cursive fonts, ornate layouts, or warm romantic lighting in photos. Keep it clinical, practical, and printed.
