# Milk Glass Register & Navy-Black Tea Counter

A design language for trustworthy, owner-maintained, close-family hospitality interfaces.

---

## Philosophy

> "Local trust comes from readable structure and modest presentation."

This system creates interfaces that evoke a quiet afternoon at a local tea house—structured like a neatly kept ledger or folded menu. The design relies on a steady 2014 web rhythm, visible baselines, and highly legible text rather than flashy modern UI paradigms. It is profoundly functional, quietly elegant, and completely devoid of startup-era visual noise.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Readable Structure Generates Trust** — Familiar, reliable layouts with steady gutters out-perform clever, floating UI components.
2. **Owner-Maintained Charm** — The interface should feel meticulously kept by a proprietor, not generated by an algorithm.
3. **Modest Photography** — Images act as grounded accents rather than full-screen takeovers. They are quiet and contextual.
4. **Visible Baselines** — Content sits firmly on defined lines. Fine w3-grey rules structure the page and guide the eye.
5. **The Proof Line** — A single, near-black navy line of text acts as the undeniable proof of quality, grounding the page hierarchy.

### Strict Rules

* **Capped Typography** — Headlines are strictly centered and never exceed 3xl.
* **Restrained Layout** — Pages must follow: light navbar, centered headline, short paragraph, two restrained CTAs, modest image below, ruled menu rows, practical details section, quiet footer.
* **No SaaS Tropes** — Floating SaaS cards, UI badges, and stickers are entirely forbidden.
* **No Beige** — Despite the "tea house" theme, backgrounds are strictly w3-white or w3-light-grey.
* **Motion is Functional** — Interactivity is limited to gentle fades and classic underline hovers. No scaling, springs, or shifting layouts.

## Color Palette

### The Register Scale

The palette uses standard W3.CSS colors, tuned to evoke physical paper ledgers and crisp table settings.

```css
/* Core Backgrounds */
w3-white              /* Primary page canvas (#ffffff) */
w3-light-grey         /* Structural bands, practical detail sections (#f1f1f1) */
/* Structural Lines */
w3-border-grey        /* Fine rules, row dividers, baselines (#9e9e9e) */
/* Typography */
text-charcoal         /* Standard reading text, deep but not pure black (#333333) */
text-charcoal-light   /* Secondary details, menu descriptions (#555555) */
/* The Near-Black Accent: W3-Indigo/Navy */
/* Used strictly for: CTAs, Active Nav, and ONE Proof Line per page */
w3-indigo-black       /* Custom override: Deepest navy/indigo (#161621) */
/* Specialty Accents */
text-golden-yellow    /* Star ratings ONLY (#FFD700). Never used for alerts. */
milk-glass-overlay    /* Image area overlay: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.65) + subtle blur */
```

### Common Mistakes (Forbidden Colors)
* **Generic Royal Blue** — Never use default `#0000FF` or standard bright blue. The accent must be near-black indigo.
* **Beige** — No warm/sepia background washes. Maintain crisp white pages.

## Typography

Typography relies on a timeless pairing of classic web-safe and modern editorial fonts. It emphasizes a compact 2014 rhythm where body text is generously sized but closely tracked, and headlines are modest and centered.

### Font Families

```css
/* Headings: The Classic Serif */
font-family: "Georgia", "Times New Roman", "Libre Baskerville", serif;
/* Body: The Highly Legible Sans-Serif */
font-family: "Trebuchet MS", "Lucida Grande", "Source Sans 3", sans-serif;
```

### Font Size Scale

```css
/* Body base is strictly 17-18px for maximum legibility */
w3-medium          /* Standard body copy, menu descriptions (17-18px) */
w3-large           /* Subheadings, menu item names, practical details (20px) */
w3-xlarge          /* Section headers, the Proof Line (24px) */
w3-xxlarge         /* Standard page headers (30px) */
w3-xxxlarge        /* MAXIMUM ALLOWED SIZE. Centered main headlines (36px) */
```

### Formatting Rules

| Element | Family | Size | Weight | Color | Alignment |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Main Headline | Serif | 3xl (Max) | Normal | Charcoal | Centered |
| The Proof Line | Serif | xl | Italic | Near-Black Navy | Centered |
| Menu Item Name | Sans-serif | large | Bold | Charcoal | Left |
| Body Paragraph | Sans-serif | medium (17px) | Normal | Charcoal | Left / Centered |
| Nav Links | Sans-serif | medium | Normal | Charcoal | Flat / Ruled |
| CTAs | Sans-serif | medium | Bold | w3-white | Centered |

## Spacing & Rhythm

### Compact 2014 Rhythm

Padding and margins should not be overly expansive. Keep gutters steady and content grouped logically.

```css
/* Standard W3 Padding Classes */
w3-padding-16      /* Default row padding for menu items and practical details */
w3-padding-32      /* Section separators, light-grey bands */
w3-margin-bottom   /* Standard spacing below paragraphs before CTAs */
/* Gutters */
w3-row-padding     /* Steady, predictable grid gutters (no massive modern gaps) */
```

---

## Animation & Interaction

### Core Philosophy: Quiet Utility

Elements do not jump, pop, or sweep. They simply acknowledge the user's presence.

### Hover States

```css
/* Navigation & Text Links */
.nav-link:hover {
  text-decoration: underline;
  color: #161621; /* Near-black navy */
}
/* Image Transitions (Fades Only) */
.modest-image {
  transition: opacity 0.3s ease-in-out;
}
.modest-image:hover {
  opacity: 0.85;
}
```

---

## Imagery

Photography is grounded and physical. It should never feel like stock photography or a glossy startup hero image.

* **Subjects:** White cups, silver cake forks, wet windows, folded paper menus, clean counters.
* **Treatment:** "Milk-glass image areas." Images are often housed behind soft, semi-transparent white panes that give a frosted, quiet feel.

### The Milk Glass Area

```html
<!-- Used to float text over a modest photograph without losing readability -->
<div class="w3-display-container">
  <img src="modest-tea-cup.jpg" alt="White cup" class="w3-image">
  <div class="w3-display-middle milk-glass-overlay w3-padding-32">
    <!-- Content here -->
  </div>
</div>
```
```css
.milk-glass-overlay {
  background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.75);
  backdrop-filter: blur(4px);
  border: 1px solid rgba(255, 255, 255, 0.9);
}
```

## UI Components & W3 Catalog

### The Light Navbar

Strictly functional. No sticky heavy headers, no massive dropdowns.

```html
<div class="w3-bar w3-white w3-border-bottom w3-border-grey">
  <a href="#" class="w3-bar-item w3-button w3-hover-none nav-link w3-text-indigo-black font-bold">Home</a>
  <a href="#" class="w3-bar-item w3-button w3-hover-none nav-link">Menu</a>
  <a href="#" class="w3-bar-item w3-button w3-hover-none nav-link">Visit</a>
</div>
```

### The Ruled Menu Row

Replaces the "SaaS Card". A flat, structurally sound row with a visible baseline.

```html
<div class="w3-row w3-padding-16 w3-border-bottom w3-border-grey">
  <div class="w3-col s9">
    <h3 class="w3-large w3-margin-0 font-sans font-bold text-charcoal">Earl Grey Reserve</h3>
    <p class="w3-medium text-charcoal-light w3-margin-0 mt-1">Served with lemon or milk. Steeps for 4 minutes.</p>
  </div>
  <div class="w3-col s3 w3-right-align">
    <span class="w3-large font-serif text-charcoal">£4.50</span>
  </div>
</div>
```

### Restrained CTAs

Only two allowed per primary view. Uses the near-black W3-indigo accent. No gradients, no rounded pills—just sensible, slightly rounded buttons.

```html
<div class="w3-center w3-margin-top">
  <!-- Primary CTA -->
  <button class="w3-button w3-indigo-black w3-round text-w3-white w3-margin-right">
    Reserve a Table
  </button>
  <!-- Secondary CTA -->
  <button class="w3-button w3-white w3-border w3-border-grey w3-round text-charcoal w3-hover-light-grey">
    View Full Menu
  </button>
</div>
```

### Golden Yellow Stars

The only acceptable use of yellow. Used strictly for rating/quality indicators.

```html
<div class="text-golden-yellow w3-large tracking-widest">
  ★★★★★
</div>
```

### Practical Details Section

A banded section (using `w3-light-grey`) designed for opening hours, addresses, and parking information.

```html
<div class="w3-container w3-light-grey w3-padding-32 w3-border-top w3-border-bottom w3-border-grey">
  <h2 class="w3-xlarge font-serif w3-center text-charcoal">Practical Details</h2>
  <!-- Content grid goes here -->
</div>
```

## Quality Checklist

* [ ] Is the primary headline an elegant Serif, strictly centered, and no larger than `3xl`?
* [ ] Is the body copy a highly readable Sans-Serif set at exactly `17px` or `18px`?
* [ ] Does the page layout follow the required flow: Navbar → Centered Headline → Short Paragraph → Two CTAs → Modest Image below?
* [ ] Are all lists formatted as visible `w3-border-bottom w3-border-grey` ruled rows instead of floating cards?
* [ ] Is the "Near-Black Navy" accent used *only* for active nav, the two CTAs, and a single proof line?
* [ ] Are golden yellow stars the *only* non-monochrome element outside of the navy accent and photography?
* [ ] Are hover states strictly limited to text underlines and gentle image fades?
