# Milk-Glass Juniper Ink & Vermouth-Red Appointment Card Design System

A design language for refined, structured, and deeply intentional interfaces that evoke the tactile elegance of a bespoke physical appointment card.

---

## Philosophy

> "Beauty emerges from useful structure; every element must feel chosen, never default."

This system creates interfaces that feel like a physical, beautifully printed appointment card. It rejects the overly polished, synthetic warmth of modern software, favoring a cool, analog precision. The aesthetic relies on thick, cardstock-like surfaces, deeply saturated ink tones, and stark, architectural layouts.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Beauty comes from useful structure** — Layouts are unpretentious and fundamentally utilitarian. Structural grids act as the primary aesthetic driver.
2. **Honest imagery** — Visuals are moody, authentic, and grounded in physical reality. No artificial embellishments.
3. **Restrained colour** — The palette is intentionally cold and muted, allowing the stark red of a call-to-action to act as a definitive, urgent stamp.
4. **Type that feels chosen** — Typography leans heavily into classic, beautifully cut serifs with generous breathing room, rejecting default sans-serif homogeneity.

### Strict Rules

* **Centered Hero Restraint** — The hero section must be perfectly centered, featuring a display heading capped strictly at `3xl`, followed by a concise description and a direct CTA, sitting above a wide photographic image.
* **Structural Grids Only** — Image grids must be strictly two-column, constrained to 80% viewport width, and set against a pale juniper-grey field.
* **Calm Navigation & Menus** — Navbars must remain light. Menus are strictly one-column separated by calm, graphite-green hairlines. No crowded layouts.
* **No SaaS Polish** — Strictly no floating avatars, no notification badges, no rounded drop shadows, and absolutely no foliage decoration or beige warmth.

## Color Palette

### The Core Scale

The palette is distinctly cool, avoiding standard warm greys and generic sage greens. Surfaces feel like frosted glass and heavy card, while text feels like wet, dark ink.

```css
:root {
  /* Surfaces */
  --color-milk-glass: #F8FAF9;       /* Main canvas, pure but slightly cool */
  --color-juniper-pale: #E4EBE8;     /* Secondary panels, background fields */
  --color-juniper-muted: #D1DCD8;    /* Hover states for secondary surfaces */
  /* Structural Lines */
  --color-graphite-light: #B4BFBC;   /* Extremely subtle borders */
  --color-graphite-green: #83908C;   /* Hairlines, dividers, and calm boundaries */
  /* The Ink (Typography & Icons) */
  --color-ink-faded: #4A5753;        /* Secondary text, metadata */
  --color-ink-black: #111C18;        /* Primary text, headings, strong structure */
  /* The Stamp (Primary Accent) */
  --color-vermouth-red: #8B2626;     /* Strictly for CTAs and active selected states */
  --color-vermouth-dark: #6E1E1E;    /* CTA hover states */
  /* The Star (Strictly for Reviews) */
  --color-golden-yellow: #D4AF37;    /* Reserved entirely for review stars */
}
```

### Applied Vanilla CSS Classes

```css
/* Backgrounds */
.bg-surface-primary { background-color: var(--color-milk-glass); }
.bg-surface-panel { background-color: var(--color-juniper-pale); }
.bg-surface-action { background-color: var(--color-vermouth-red); }
/* Borders */
.border-hairline { border: 1px solid var(--color-graphite-green); }
.divider-calm { border-bottom: 1px solid var(--color-graphite-green); }
/* Text */
.text-primary { color: var(--color-ink-black); }
.text-secondary { color: var(--color-ink-faded); }
.text-action { color: var(--color-vermouth-red); }
```

---

## Typography

Typography is the absolute soul of this system. It relies entirely on beautifully crafted serifs, paired for contrast between heading structure and body readability.

### Font Families

```css
:root {
  /* Headings: Structural, elegant, sharp */
  --font-heading: 'Trykker', 'Manuale', 'Halant', serif;
  /* Body: Highly readable, classic ink-trap feel */
  --font-body: 'Domine', 'Crimson Pro', 'Merriweather', serif;
}
```

### Font Size Scale & Rules

Headings are intentionally capped. A `3xl` limit ensures the interface feels like a printed document rather than a shouting billboard.

```css
/* Core Typography Variables */
:root {
  --text-xs: 0.75rem;    /* 12px - Captions, footer links */
  --text-sm: 0.875rem;   /* 14px - Menu items, secondary notes */
  --text-base: 1rem;     /* 16px - Standard body copy */
  --text-lg: 1.125rem;   /* 18px - Large body, introductory paragraphs */
  --text-xl: 1.25rem;    /* 20px - Section subheadings */
  --text-2xl: 1.5rem;    /* 24px - Standard headers */
  --text-3xl: 2rem;      /* 32px - MAXIMUM SIZE: Hero display heading only */
}
/* Base Typographic Rules */
.font-heading {
  font-family: var(--font-heading);
  font-weight: 400; /* Regular weights favored over heavy bolds */
  color: var(--color-ink-black);
}
.font-body {
  font-family: var(--font-body);
  font-weight: 400;
  color: var(--color-ink-black);
}
```

### Spacing & Rhythm (Old-Builder Consistency)

```css
.body-text {
  font-family: var(--font-body);
  font-size: var(--text-base);
  line-height: 1.8; /* Generous, breathable leading */
  letter-spacing: 0.01em;
}
.heading-hero {
  font-family: var(--font-heading);
  font-size: var(--text-3xl);
  line-height: 1.2;
  letter-spacing: -0.02em;
  margin-bottom: 1.5rem; /* Compact but breathable */
}
```

---

## Animation System

### Core Philosophy: Analog Restraint

Motion in this system mimics the slow physical reveal of flipping a heavy page or sliding a card across a desk. No bouncing, no spring physics, no rapid snaps.

### Page Transitions & Hovers

```css
/* Slow Fades */
.fade-in {
  opacity: 0;
  animation: slowFade 0.8s cubic-bezier(0.4, 0, 0.2, 1) forwards;
}
@keyframes slowFade {
  to { opacity: 1; }
}
/* Fine Underline Hovers */
.link-hover {
  position: relative;
  text-decoration: none;
  color: var(--color-ink-black);
}
.link-hover::after {
  content: '';
  position: absolute;
  width: 100%;
  transform: scaleX(0);
  height: 1px;
  bottom: -2px;
  left: 0;
  background-color: var(--color-vermouth-red);
  transform-origin: bottom right;
  transition: transform 0.4s cubic-bezier(0.4, 0, 0.2, 1);
}
.link-hover:hover::after {
  transform: scaleX(1);
  transform-origin: bottom left;
}
```

## UI Components & Layouts

### The Hero Section

Strictly centered, constrained sizing, leading directly into wide photography.

```html
<header class="hero-container">
  <h1 class="heading-hero">Reservations & Inquiries</h1>
  <p class="hero-description body-text">
    A concise description limited to two lines, centered gracefully beneath the title.
  </p>
  <button class="btn-primary">Make an Appointment</button>
  <div class="hero-image-wrapper">
    <img src="..." alt="Black leather notebook and silver spoons" class="hero-wide-image" />
  </div>
</header>
```

```css
.hero-container {
  display: flex;
  flex-direction: column;
  align-items: center;
  text-align: center;
  padding: 4rem 2rem;
  background-color: var(--color-milk-glass);
}
.hero-wide-image {
  width: 100%;
  max-width: 1200px;
  height: auto;
  margin-top: 3rem;
  filter: contrast(1.1) grayscale(0.2); /* Moody, honest imagery */
}
```

### The Image Grid

An 80%-width, two-column grid set against a pale juniper field.

```css
.juniper-field {
  background-color: var(--color-juniper-pale);
  padding: 4rem 0;
  display: flex;
  justify-content: center;
}
.image-grid-2col {
  width: 80%;
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 1fr 1fr;
  gap: 2rem; /* Medium gutters */
}
```

### Menus & Dividers

One-column, spacious, separated by calm hairlines. No crowded copy.

```css
.menu-list {
  display: flex;
  flex-direction: column;
  max-width: 600px;
  margin: 0 auto;
}
.menu-item {
  padding: 1.5rem 0;
  border-bottom: 1px solid var(--color-graphite-green);
  display: flex;
  justify-content: space-between;
  align-items: center;
}
```

---

## Component Catalog

### Buttons

```css
/* Direct CTA (The Vermouth Stamp) */
.btn-primary {
  background-color: var(--color-vermouth-red);
  color: var(--color-milk-glass);
  font-family: var(--font-body);
  font-size: var(--text-sm);
  padding: 0.75rem 1.5rem;
  border: none;
  cursor: pointer;
  transition: background-color 0.4s ease;
}
.btn-primary:hover {
  background-color: var(--color-vermouth-dark);
}
```

### Panels & Cards

```css
/* Pale Juniper Panel */
.panel-card {
  background-color: var(--color-juniper-pale);
  border: 1px solid var(--color-graphite-light);
  padding: 2rem;
  /* STRICTLY NO BOX-SHADOW */
}
```

### Reviews

```css
/* Golden Yellow Stars Only */
.review-star {
  color: var(--color-golden-yellow);
  font-size: var(--text-sm);
}
```

## Imagery & Photography

Photography is treated as an architectural element. It must possess a specific mood and texture.

* **Required Subjects:** Green glass, black leather notebooks, silver spoons, rainy pavements, handwritten reservations.
* **Treatment:** High contrast, slightly desaturated, cool color temperature.
* **Framing:** Honest, un-staged feeling, often utilizing wide cinematic crops.

---

## Quality Checklist

* [ ] Is the primary hero heading strictly capped at `3xl` (2rem)?
* [ ] Does the body copy utilize `Domine`, `Crimson Pro`, or `Merriweather` with a minimum line-height of `1.8`?
* [ ] Are all structural dividers rendered in `graphite-green` rather than generic gray?
* [ ] Is the image grid explicitly 2-columns and constrained to 80% of the viewport on a juniper background?
* [ ] Are hover states utilizing slow fades and fine underlines instead of scale/transform bumps?
* [ ] Are the review stars the absolute *only* elements using golden yellow?

---

## Allowed vs Not Allowed

### ✓ Allowed

* Milk-glass white (`#F8FAF9`) backgrounds for primary navigation and hero sections.
* Dry vermouth-red reserved exclusively for direct Call-to-Action buttons and selected active states.
* Slow, deliberate CSS opacity fades.
* Old-builder spacing: medium gutters, compact but highly breathable vertical rhythm.
* Photography featuring cool tones, rain, ink, and leather.

### ✗ Not Allowed

* **Generic Sage or Beige Warmth:** Do not warm up the greys. Keep them strictly pale juniper.
* **Low Contrast:** Avoid muted text. Use Green-black ink for maximum legibility.
* **Bright Red:** Never use standard `#FF0000` or alert reds. Only dry vermouth-red.
* **SaaS Polish:** Absolutely no drop shadows, no border-radius above 2px (if any), no floating avatars, and no notification badges.
* **Foliage Decoration:** No decorative plants or soft lifestyle botanicals in imagery.
* **Crowded Copy:** Menus must remain sparse, single-column, and highly direct.
