# Milk-White Aubergine & Pale Zinc Review Folio

A design language for elegant, editorial-driven interfaces built on structural social proof and stark material simplicity.

---

## Philosophy

> "Refinement is achieved through proportion; trust is baked into the structure."

This system rejects the visual clutter of modern web applications in favor of an editorial, tactile experience. It emulates the physical presence of a high-end hospitality environment or a bespoke print folio. The design relies on the tension between classical serifs and utilitarian monospace, anchored by undeniable social proof and photography bathed in natural light.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Refinement through proportion** — Impact is created not by oversized elements, but by the precise spatial relationship between imagery, typography, and canvas.
2. **Restrained color** — Color is a utilitarian tool. The palette is relentlessly neutral, allowing the photography and golden review stars to generate warmth.
3. **Readable copy** — Monospace typography is utilized for its structural, tabular qualities, but it must never be reduced to unreadable, tiny sizes. Readability is paramount.
4. **Social proof as structure** — Reviews and star ratings are not aftermarket widgets; they are foundational architectural elements of the page layouts.

### Strict Rules

* **Restrained Headline Scale** — Massive, screen-filling text is forbidden. Headlines remain dignified and restrained, relying on font contrast rather than sheer size.
* **No SaaS Cards or Avatars** — The interface is an editorial folio, not a dashboard. Content lives on the canvas or within pale zinc-grey modules, never in floating drop-shadow cards. Avatars are strictly forbidden.
* **HTML-Table-Inspired Menus** — Data and menus are presented with the brutal, elegant simplicity of classic tabular HTML.
* **No Gradients or Beige** — Backgrounds are strictly flat milk-white or pale zinc-grey. Beige introduces unwanted warmth; gradients introduce false depth.
* **Golden Stars Under Hero** — The hero section must be image-led, with the primary claim immediately followed by golden yellow review stars.

## Color Palette

### The Canvas, Typography, and Accents

The palette is extremely disciplined. The canvas is a pure, unyielding milk-white, sectioned by pale zinc-grey. Typography is a soft charcoal to reduce eye strain, while golden yellow acts as the sole indicator of quality. The dry aubergine accent is deployed with extreme prejudice.

```css
/* Backgrounds (The Canvas and Modules) */
bg-white              /* Milk-white primary content fields (#ffffff) */
bg-zinc-50            /* Ultra-pale zinc for subtle banding (#fafafa) */
bg-zinc-100           /* Pale zinc-grey primary modules and panels (#f4f4f5) */
bg-zinc-200           /* Hover darkening states for interactive modules (#e4e4e7) */
/* Structural Borders */
border-zinc-200       /* Table borders, horizontal panel dividers */
border-zinc-300       /* Active boundaries, image framing */
/* Typography (Soft Charcoal) */
text-zinc-800         /* Primary body copy, standard headings (#27272a) */
text-zinc-600         /* Secondary labels, table metadata, tertiary copy (#52525b) */
text-zinc-500         /* Subtle structural text, disabled fields (#71717a) */
/* The Trust Layer */
text-yellow-500       /* Golden yellow review stars - strictly for social proof */
bg-yellow-500         /* Solid golden stars or micro-bars for rating aggregates */
/* The Accent: Dry Aubergine */
/* Note: Must avoid "luxury bright purple" clichés. Use deep, dry, desaturated tones. */
text-rose-950         /* Primary text links, proof links (#4c1d95 shifted to dry plum/rose-950: #4a154b) */
bg-rose-950           /* Primary Call-to-Action (CTA) background only */
border-rose-950       /* One editorial pull-note left border */
bg-rose-900/10        /* Extremely subtle backdrop for the single editorial pull-note */
```

## Typography

The typography system relies on the interplay between classical, high-contrast serifs (Rufina, Libre Baskerville, Fanwood Text) and legible, structural monospace (Space Mono, PT Mono, Anonymous Pro).

### Font Families

```css
font-serif       /* Headings only. Rufina, Libre Baskerville, or Fanwood Text */
font-mono        /* Body copy, labels, tabular data. Space Mono, PT Mono, or Anonymous Pro */
```

### Font Size Scale

*Crucially: Monospace body copy must not be tiny.*

```css
text-sm          /* Micro-labels, table headers, timestamp metadata (14px minimum) */
text-base        /* Standard monospace body copy, menu item descriptions (16px) */
text-lg          /* Lead paragraphs, centered review-count text (18px) */
text-xl          /* Sub-section headings, location panel titles (20px) */
text-2xl         /* Primary section headings, editorial pull-notes (24px) */
text-3xl         /* Maximum hero headline size — severely restrained (30px) */
```

### Hierarchy Examples

| Element | Family | Size | Color | Transform |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hero Headline | serif | 3xl | zinc-800 | none |
| Review Count | mono | lg | zinc-800 | none |
| Body Copy | mono | base | zinc-800 | none |
| Table Headers | mono | sm | zinc-600 | uppercase |
| Primary CTA | mono | base | white | uppercase |
| Editorial Note | serif | 2xl | rose-950 | italic |

## Animation System

### Core Philosophy: Quiet Tactility

Motion is restricted to the bare minimum required for user feedback. No spring physics, no sliding layouts, no dramatic scale changes. Interactions mimic paper and light.

### Page Transitions (Subtle Fades)

```tsx
initial={{ opacity: 0 }}
animate={{ opacity: 1 }}
transition={{ duration: 0.6, ease: "easeInOut" }}
```

### Micro-Interactions (Hover Darkening)

Links and modules strictly use hover darkening. Elements step down one shade in the zinc scale.

```tsx
className="transition-colors duration-200 ease-in bg-zinc-100 hover:bg-zinc-200"
```

## UI Components

### Image-Led Hero with Baked Proof

The hero section places photography first, followed by a restrained heading, immediately anchored by golden stars.

```tsx
<div className="flex flex-col items-center text-center space-y-4 mb-16">
  <div className="w-full max-w-4xl aspect-[21/9] bg-zinc-100 mb-8 overflow-hidden">
    <img
      src="/exterior-windows.jpg"
      alt="Exterior windows in counter light"
      className="w-full h-full object-cover"
    />
  </div>
  <h1 className="font-serif text-3xl text-zinc-800 max-w-2xl">
    Exceptional hospitality grounded in tradition.
  </h1>
  <div className="flex items-center space-x-2 pt-2">
    <div className="flex text-yellow-500 text-lg">
      ★★★★★
    </div>
    <span className="font-mono text-sm text-zinc-600">
      Based on 142 verified receipts
    </span>
  </div>
</div>
```

### HTML-Table-Inspired Menu Area

Stripped back, functional, relying on raw structural lines rather than contained boxes.

```tsx
<div className="w-full border-t border-zinc-200">
  <div className="flex justify-between items-baseline py-4 border-b border-zinc-200 hover:bg-zinc-50 transition-colors duration-200 px-2">
    <h3 className="font-mono text-base text-zinc-800">Filter Coffee</h3>
    <span className="font-mono text-sm text-zinc-600">Single Origin, Washed</span>
    <span className="font-mono text-base text-zinc-800">$4.50</span>
  </div>
  <div className="flex justify-between items-baseline py-4 border-b border-zinc-200 hover:bg-zinc-50 transition-colors duration-200 px-2">
    <h3 className="font-mono text-base text-zinc-800">Pour Over</h3>
    <span className="font-mono text-sm text-zinc-600">Rotating Guest Roaster</span>
    <span className="font-mono text-base text-zinc-800">$6.00</span>
  </div>
</div>
```

### The Editorial Pull-Note

The only acceptable use of the aubergine accent outside of a CTA or proof link.

```tsx
<aside className="border-l-2 border-rose-950 bg-rose-900/5 pl-6 py-4 my-12 max-w-3xl mx-auto">
  <p className="font-serif italic text-2xl text-rose-950 leading-relaxed">
    "The attention to detail is absolute. A masterclass in restraint."
  </p>
</aside>
```

</div>
```
## Quality Checklist
* [ ] Is the primary typeface for body copy a readable, non-tiny monospace (Space Mono, PT Mono, Anonymous Pro)?
* [ ] Are the headlines restrained in scale (no larger than `text-3xl`) and utilizing a classic serif?
* [ ] Are golden stars placed immediately beneath the primary hero claim?
* [ ] Is the aubergine accent strictly reserved for the primary CTA, proof links, and one editorial pull-note?
* [ ] Are all menus and data lists formatted using bare HTML-table style borders (`border-y`, `border-collapse`) rather than floating cards?
* [ ] Is the imagery strictly conforming to the art direction: counter light, china, folded receipts, exterior windows?
---
## Allowed vs Not Allowed
### ✓ Allowed
* Milk-white (`bg-white`) and pale zinc-grey (`bg-zinc-100`) backgrounds.
* Golden yellow strictly for review stars.
* Dry aubergine for targeted CTAs and editorial emphasis.
* Baseline-led, moderate spacing (e.g., `leading-relaxed`, `space-y-6`).
* Hover darkening and simple opacity fades for state changes.
* Photography featuring counter light, china, folded receipts, and exterior windows.
### ✗ Not Allowed
* SaaS-style floating cards or heavy drop shadows of any kind.
* Gradients or beige/warm backgrounds.
* Avatars (human faces or illustrated profiles in reviews).
* Tiny monospace body copy (anything below `text-sm` is forbidden).
* Bright "luxury" purple clichés (must be a dry, desaturated aubergine).
* Decorative clutter (unnecessary icons, geometric background patterns, rules without purpose).
* Large, overbearing headline sizes.
