# Milk-White Counter Sheets & Soft-Black Receipt Ink

A design language for honest, close-family café landing pages built with the stark utility of a freshly printed document.

---

## Philosophy

> "Good coffee requires no garnish; good design requires no styling."

This system creates interfaces that feel like a clean, owner-editable document straight off a high-quality receipt printer or a perfectly organized clipboard. The design relies on high contrast, strict right angles, and the tactile reality of physical paper. It confidently rejects the beige, overly warm aesthetic typical of coffee shops, as well as the slick, rounded polish of modern tech startups.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Readability is hospitality** — Clear, soft-black typography on stark white sheets is the digital equivalent of a cleanly wiped counter.
2. **Maintainable by nature** — The document-like structure ensures the layout feels repeatable, bulletproof, and naturally editable by the owner.
3. **Image confidence creates trust** — Bold, unstyled photography (cups, tiled counters, window reflections, printed menus) grounds the page in physical reality.
4. **Visible architecture** — Practical, 2021 website-builder rhythms with obvious section joins and medium gutters provide reliable structure without attempting to hide the grid.
5. **Utilitarian interactives** — Buttons and calls to action must feel printed, stamped, and deliberate, never "styled" or soft.

### Strict Rules

* **No Rounded Corners** — Absolutely zero rounded SaaS cards or pill-shaped buttons. Everything is aggressively squared.
* **No Badges, Avatars, or Icons** — Function over decoration. Remove all UI fluff.
* **No Colored Backgrounds** — Backgrounds are strictly white or pale grey (`w3-light-grey`). No exceptions.
* **No Gradients** — Backgrounds, buttons, and text remain strictly flat to preserve the printed illusion.
* **Sticky Light Navbar** — Navigation is functional, top-anchored, 100% width, and completely transparent or stark white.

## Color Palette

### The Printed Document Scale

The palette mimics the physical materials of a café point-of-sale: bleached white paper, stainless steel or pale grey trays, rich receipt ink, and the golden yellow of an honest customer review.

```css
/* Backgrounds & Section Trays */
w3-white              /* Primary document sheets (#ffffff) */
w3-light-grey         /* Section trays, structural dividers, alternating blocks (#f1f1f1) */
/* The Ink (Typography & Borders) */
w3-text-black         /* High-contrast headings, receipt-like emphasis (#000000) */
w3-text-dark-grey     /* Standard soft-black body copy, document text (#3a3a3a) */
w3-border-black       /* Squared button borders, thick structural lines */
w3-border-light-grey  /* Subtle grid joints, section dividers */
/* The Sole Accent: Golden Yellow */
w3-text-amber         /* Reserved strictly for review stars (#ffc107) */
w3-text-yellow        /* Alternative stark star accent */
/* UI Elements */
w3-black              /* Core call-to-action blocks, stamped buttons */
w3-hover-opacity      /* The only acceptable interaction state for images and buttons */
w3-hover-light-grey   /* Subtle row hovers for menu lists */
```

### Destructive / Error States

```css
/* Unstyled, functional text only */
w3-text-red
w3-border-red
```

---

## Typography

The entire system relies exclusively on **Quattrocento Sans**. The hierarchy is deliberately flattened to mimic an editorial document or physical menu rather than a flashy marketing site.

### Font Weights

```css
/* Note: Applied via standard CSS alongside W3 classes */
font-weight: 400;      /* Standard body copy, FAQ text, standard links */
font-weight: 700;      /* Document intro blocks, bold menu items, strict CTAs */
```

### Font Size Scale

```css
font-size: 15px;       /* Compact FAQ headings, metadata, footer links */
font-size: 17px;       /* Core body copy - Highly readable, document standard */
font-size: 20px;       /* Bold document intro, section sub-headers */
font-size: 1.5rem;     /* Secondary section headers */
font-size: 2.4rem;     /* Standard hero typography */
font-size: 2.8rem;     /* Maximum allowable hero scale */
```

### Letter Spacing & Transforms

```css
letter-spacing: normal;  /* Used for 90% of the site to ensure readability */
text-transform: none;    /* Default sentence case for menus and intros */
text-transform: uppercase; /* Use sparingly for small directional labels (e.g., "MENU") */
```

### Hierarchy Examples

| Element | Size | Weight | Color | Spacing | Transform |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hero Headline | 2.8rem | 400 | w3-text-black | normal | none |
| Document Intro | 20px | 700 | w3-text-dark-grey | normal | none |
| Main Body | 17px | 400 | w3-text-dark-grey | normal | none |
| FAQ Headings | 15px | 700 | w3-text-black | normal | none |
| Action Buttons | 17px | 700 | w3-white | normal | none |

## Animation System

### Core Philosophy: The Static Page

Cafés are physical, grounded spaces. The website must feel similarly anchored. Motion is restricted entirely to rudimentary, unpretentious fades. No sliding, no springing, no parallax.

### Page & Element Transitions (Soft Fade)

```css
/* W3.CSS built-in animation */
.w3-animate-opacity {
  animation: opac 0.8s;
}
@keyframes opac {
  from {opacity: 0} to {opacity: 1}
}
```

### Micro-Interactions

```css
/* Buttons and images simply dim on touch/hover */
.w3-hover-opacity:hover {
  opacity: 0.85 !important;
  transition: opacity 0.2s ease;
}
```

## UI Components

### Visible Section Joins

Sections do not blend or float. They stack like papers in a tray. Medium gutters and explicit background color changes mark the boundaries.

```html
<!-- Section Tray to White Sheet transition -->
<div class="w3-container w3-light-grey w3-padding-64">
  <div class="w3-content">...</div>
</div>
<div class="w3-container w3-white w3-padding-64 w3-border-top w3-border-light-grey">
  <div class="w3-content">...</div>
</div>
```

### Image Confidence (The Unstyled Frame)

Images of tiled counters or window reflections must be presented raw, without overlays, gradients, or rounded corners. 100% width on mobile, strict grid on desktop.

```html
<div class="w3-row-padding">
  <div class="w3-col m6">
    <img src="tiled-counter.jpg" class="w3-image w3-hover-opacity" style="width:100%" alt="Counter">
  </div>
</div>
```

### The Document Anchor (Sticky Light Navbar)

```html
<div class="w3-top">
  <div class="w3-bar w3-white w3-border-bottom w3-border-light-grey w3-padding">
    <a href="#" class="w3-bar-item w3-button w3-hover-none w3-text-black" style="font-weight: 700; font-size: 20px;">Café Name</a>
  </div>
</div>
```

---

## Component Catalog

### Printed CTAs (Buttons)

Square, heavy, and utilitarian. They look like they were stamped onto the page with black ink.

```html
<!-- Primary Stamped Button -->
<button class="w3-button w3-black w3-hover-opacity w3-padding-large" style="font-weight: 700; font-size: 17px; border-radius: 0;">
  View Full Menu
</button>
<!-- Secondary Ghost Button -->
<button class="w3-button w3-white w3-border w3-border-black w3-hover-light-grey w3-padding-large" style="font-weight: 700; font-size: 17px; border-radius: 0;">
  Find Location
</button>
```

### Review Stars (The Golden Yellow)

The only permitted graphic element, placed cleanly next to soft-black text.

```html
<div class="w3-margin-bottom">
  <span class="w3-text-amber" style="font-size: 17px;">★★★★★</span>
  <p class="w3-text-dark-grey" style="font-size: 17px; font-weight: 700; margin-top: 4px;">"Best pour-over in the district."</p>
</div>
```

### Menu Sheets (Data Structure)

Instead of cards, data is presented as a typed list on a flat sheet, emphasizing the 17px body and 20px intro scale.

```html
<div class="w3-container w3-white w3-border w3-border-light-grey w3-padding-32">
  <h3 style="font-size: 20px; font-weight: 700;" class="w3-text-black w3-margin-bottom">Filter Coffee</h3>
  <div class="w3-row w3-border-bottom w3-border-light-grey w3-padding-16 w3-hover-light-grey">
    <div class="w3-col s10 w3-text-dark-grey" style="font-size: 17px;">Single Origin Batch</div>
    <div class="w3-col s2 w3-right-align w3-text-black" style="font-weight: 700;">$4</div>
  </div>
</div>
```

### Forms & Inputs

Basic, squared, high-contrast borders. No inner shadows or floating labels.

```html
<input class="w3-input w3-border w3-border-black w3-white w3-padding-16" type="text" placeholder="Email address" style="border-radius: 0; font-size: 17px;">
```

## Quality Checklist

* [ ] Is the hero typography strictly constrained between 2.4rem and 2.8rem?
* [ ] Are all backgrounds solely `w3-white` or `w3-light-grey`?
* [ ] Is the entire interface devoid of rounded corners, box shadows, and gradient overlays?
* [ ] Are buttons perfectly square, solid black (`w3-black`), and utilizing soft fades (`w3-hover-opacity`)?
* [ ] Are images completely unaltered and free of styling?
* [ ] Did you avoid all icons, badges, and avatars (excluding golden review stars)?
* [ ] Does the page feel like an easily maintainable, printed Word document or POS receipt?

## Allowed vs Not Allowed

### ✓ Allowed

* Full-width white sheets spanning 100% of the container.
* Quattrocento Sans exclusively, respecting the 15/17/20/hero size constraints.
* Hard, visible borders (`w3-border-light-grey`) joining sections.
* Unstyled photography showcasing reflections, cups, menus, and real physical spaces.
* Pure black backgrounds for buttons and pure white for navigation bars.
* Subtle `.w3-animate-opacity` fades for entrance and hover states.

### ✗ Not Allowed

* Warm, beige, or "coffee-colored" backgrounds (e.g., `#F5F5DC`, brown accents).
* Border radiuses (`border-radius`, `w3-round`, `w3-round-large`) anywhere on the site.
* Drop shadows, even soft ones.
* Startup conventions (e.g., avatars in circles, colored status badges, checkmark icons).
* Parallax scrolling, bouncy spring animations, or sliding panels.
* Oversized hero typography exceeding 2.8rem.
