# Milk-White Ledger & Sour-Cherry Review Stamp

A design language for honest, utility-driven interfaces inspired by pristine restaurant ledgers, architectural order slips, and crisp receipt typography.

---

## Philosophy

> "Useful content, calm typography, and honest photography create more trust than decoration."

This system creates interfaces that feel like a freshly printed receipt or an immaculate ledger book—clean, trustworthy, and purely functional. The design relies on visible structure, tactile but understated surfaces, and absolute alignment to establish a sense of authenticity and order. It completely rejects artificial nostalgia in favor of genuine utility.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Structure over styling** — Visible row structures, consistent gutters, and absolute price alignment provide a sense of fiscal and functional honesty.
2. **Restrained scale** — Typography remains modest. Generous line-height and calm spacing are used to create hierarchy rather than shouting with massive fonts.
3. **The Accent is an artifact** — The sour-cherry accent acts like an ink-stamped seal of approval or a receipt mark. It is applied deliberately and sparingly.
4. **Photography is reality** — Imagery must reflect physical, honest moments—order slips, folded menus, jam glasses, and counter reflections. No manufactured studio perfection.

### Strict Rules

* **Light Navbar Only** — Navigation must feel like the top margin of a clean ledger page.
* **Centered 80% Wrapper** — Content breathes within a rigid, centered column; the edges of the "paper" are felt.
* **Single Hero Image** — One honest photograph anchors the page.
* **Paired Square CTAs** — Action buttons are rigid, grounded, and unrounded.
* **One Proof Line** — Social proof is reduced to a single, highly aligned row of golden yellow stars.
* **Direct Final CTA** — The journey ends with a clear, unembellished closing action.

## Color Palette

### The Ledger Scale

The palette replaces sterile digital whites with milk-white, utilizes newspaper-greys for containment, relies on pure charcoal for legibility, and introduces two distinct, highly controlled semantic accents.

*(Note: Custom hex variables are designed to be used alongside or as overrides to standard W3 CSS classes)*

```css
/* Base Surfaces */
.w3-white           /* Milk-white canvas background (#FDFAF6) */
.w3-light-grey      /* Faint newspaper-grey panels (#F2F1EF) */
.w3-pale-grey       /* Raised card surfaces, slight elevation (#EAE9E6) */
/* Structural Lines */
.w3-border-light-grey /* Visible ledger rows, consistent gutters (#E0DEDC) */
.w3-border-grey       /* Card borders, rigid CTA outlines (#B8B6B4) */
/* Typography */
.w3-text-dark-grey  /* Charcoal text for primary ledger entries (#2C2F33) */
.w3-text-grey       /* Muted secondary text, item descriptions (#5C5E60) */
/* The Accents */
.w3-text-sour-cherry /* The Stamp: Deep, muted red for critical accents and marks (#8B1E28) */
.w3-sour-cherry      /* Background fills for primary direct CTAs */
.w3-text-amber       /* Golden yellow exclusively reserved for review stars (#D4AF37) */
```

### Common Mistakes to Avoid
```css
/* STRICTLY FORBIDDEN */
.w3-text-red        /* No candy red accents. Must be sour-cherry. */
.w3-khaki           /* No beige paper or faux distress backgrounds. */
```

---

## Typography

Typography pairs compact, highly readable serifs for structure with calm, utilitarian sans-serifs for data. The type scale is intentionally modest, relying on a generous 2014-era spacing cadence.

### Font Families

```css
/* Headlines (Compact Serifs) */
/* Pairings: Vollkorn, Fanwood Text, or Alegreya */
.font-serif {
  font-family: 'Vollkorn', 'Alegreya', serif;
  font-weight: 600;
}
/* Body & Data (Calm Sans-Serifs) */
/* Pairings: Lato, Cabin, or Noto Sans */
.font-sans {
  font-family: 'Lato', 'Cabin', sans-serif;
  font-weight: 400;
  line-height: 1.8; /* Generous line-height is mandatory */
}
```

### Modest Type Scale (W3 CSS Mapping)

```css
.w3-tiny       /* 10px - Timestamp, micro ledger details */
.w3-small      /* 12px - Secondary table descriptions */
.w3-medium     /* 15px - Standard ledger entries, body text */
.w3-large      /* 18px - Short intros, emphasized data points */
.w3-xlarge     /* 24px - Compact serif headlines */
.w3-xxlarge    /* 36px - Maximum allowed size, reserved for the single Hero */
```

### Hierarchy Examples

| Element | W3 Size | Family | Color | Characteristics |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hero Headline | `w3-xxlarge` | `.font-serif` | `w3-text-dark-grey` | Compact, no extra tracking |
| Short Intro | `w3-large` | `.font-sans` | `w3-text-grey` | Generous line-height |
| Ledger Item | `w3-medium` | `.font-sans` | `w3-text-dark-grey` | Left-aligned |
| Ledger Price | `w3-medium` | `.font-sans` | `w3-text-dark-grey` | Right-aligned, strict column |
| Review Stars | `w3-small` | Icons | `w3-text-amber` | Golden yellow, single line |

## Animation System

### Core Philosophy: Opacity Reveals Only

Movement in this system mimics the quiet act of turning a page or pulling a ledger slip from a stack. There are no sliding drawers, bouncing springs, or complex morphs.

### Page & Element Transitions

All reveals rely strictly on the W3 CSS opacity animation. Elements fade in calmly and completely static in their positioning.

```html
<!-- The only approved animation class -->
<div class="w3-animate-opacity">
  <!-- Content -->
</div>
```

* **No Transforms:** Elements must not scale up on hover.
* **No Translations:** Elements must not slide in from the left or right.

## UI Components

### Centered 80% Wrapper

The foundation of the grid. It acts as the physical boundary of the "paper."

```html
<div class="w3-content w3-container" style="max-width: 80%; margin: 0 auto;">
  <!-- Ledger rows and content reside here -->
</div>
```

### Ledger-Like Listings (Visible Row Structure)

Listings must utilize visible bottom borders and maintain absolute horizontal alignment for descriptions and prices, mimicking a printed receipt.

```html
<div class="w3-row w3-border-bottom w3-border-light-grey w3-padding-16">
  <div class="w3-col s9 w3-left-align font-sans w3-text-dark-grey">
    <strong>Folded Menu Blueprint</strong>
    <div class="w3-text-grey w3-small">Matte stock, scored edges</div>
  </div>
  <div class="w3-col s3 w3-right-align font-sans w3-text-dark-grey">
    $12.50
  </div>
</div>
```

### The Sour-Cherry Stamp

When an item is featured or confirmed, the accent color is applied not as a subtle dot, but as an angled, high-contrast stamp to break the rigorous grid organically.

```html
<div class="w3-display-container">
  <div class="w3-display-topright">
    <span class="w3-text-sour-cherry font-sans w3-small" style="font-weight: 700; text-transform: uppercase; letter-spacing: 2px; transform: rotate(-8deg); display: inline-block; border: 2px solid #8B1E28; padding: 2px 6px;">
      Verified
    </span>
  </div>
</div>
```

---

## Component Catalog

### Cards & Panels

Surfaces are faint newspaper-grey or raised pale-grey. Faux distress and chalkboard textures are strictly forbidden.

```html
<!-- Raised Pale-Grey Card (No rounded corners) -->
<div class="w3-panel w3-pale-grey w3-card-2 w3-padding-24 font-sans" style="border-radius: 0;">
  <h3 class="font-serif w3-xlarge w3-text-dark-grey">Ledger Details</h3>
  <p class="w3-text-grey">Data printed exactly as entered.</p>
</div>
```

### Paired Square CTAs

Buttons are architectural, square, and anchored. They appear side-by-side (paired) at decision points.

```html
<div class="w3-bar w3-margin-top">
  <!-- Primary Direct CTA -->
  <button class="w3-button w3-sour-cherry font-sans w3-medium w3-padding-large" style="border-radius: 0;">Confirm Order</button>
  <!-- Secondary CTA -->
  <button class="w3-button w3-white w3-border w3-border-grey w3-text-dark-grey font-sans w3-medium w3-padding-large" style="border-radius: 0;">Review Log</button>
</div>
```

### The One Proof Line

Cluttered testimonials are rejected. Trust is established through a single, clean line of golden yellow stars accompanied by calm typography.

```html
<div class="w3-row w3-padding-16 w3-center">
  <span class="w3-text-amber w3-large tracking-wide">★★★★★</span>
  <span class="w3-text-grey font-sans w3-small w3-margin-left">Based on 142 honest logs</span>
</div>
```

### Light Navbar

The navigation acts purely as the top margin of the ledger. No background colors other than milk-white.

```html
<div class="w3-bar w3-white w3-border-bottom w3-border-light-grey w3-padding-16">
  <div class="w3-content" style="max-width: 80%; margin: 0 auto;">
    <a href="#" class="w3-bar-item w3-button font-serif w3-large w3-text-dark-grey"><strong>Ledger.</strong></a>
    <a href="#" class="w3-bar-item w3-button w3-right font-sans w3-text-grey w3-hide-small">Index</a>
  </div>
</div>
```

## Quality Checklist

* [ ] Is the page wrapped in a strict, centered 80% container?
* [ ] Are all headlines using a compact serif (e.g., Vollkorn/Alegreya)?
* [ ] Are all prices and data points perfectly aligned horizontally within visible ledger rows?
* [ ] Is the primary hero image a genuine photograph (glass, counter reflections, paper) with zero artificial filters?
* [ ] Are all buttons strictly square (no border-radius)?
* [ ] Did you use opacity reveals exclusively for motion?
* [ ] Is the review section restricted to a single proof line with golden yellow stars?
