# Milk-White Newsprint & Ink-Navy Café Index

A design language for readable, photographic, and highly edited editorial interfaces.

---

## Philosophy

> "Design should be read, not decoded. Treat the screen like a freshly inked page."

This system creates interfaces that feel like a curated broadsheet or an independent culinary magazine. It relies on a rigorous dedication to typography, modest but sharp accents, and physical, photographic reality. It is edited, slightly handmade, and completely devoid of modern UI clutter—eschewing decorative containers in favor of structural typography and generous, milk-white space.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Readability above all** — The interface is an index; text must be effortlessly legible, anchored by substantial 17–18px body copy.
2. **Photographic truth** — Imagery must feel deeply physical and grounded. Authentic textures over synthetic illustrations.
3. **Edited restraint** — Every element must justify its existence. Backgrounds are strictly white or newsprint-grey; W3-sand and artificial warmth are entirely banished.
4. **Slightly handmade, never decorative** — Structure is provided by pencil-thin rules and typesetter marks. Embellishments, floating cards, and artificial depth are rejected.
5. **The modest typesetter’s mark** — Color is barely used. A single dark W3-blue accent acts only as a functional printer’s mark, guiding the eye without overwhelming the ink-navy text.

### Strict Rules

* **No Cards or Badges** — Content sits flat on the background. Use whitespace and pencil-grey rules to separate items, never boxed cards or rounded badges.
* **No Icons** — True editorial relies on typography and words. Avoid all SVG UI icons.
* **Centered Serif Hero (Max 3XL)** — Main headings must be perfectly centered and strictly capped at `3xl`. Never oversized.
* **One-Column Menu Listings** — Data and menus follow a strict, single-column listings page layout.
* **No AI Imagery or Doodles** — Only real photography (cups, receipts, street-windows, folded paper).
* **Light Navbar & Quiet Footer** — Navigation and footers must practically disappear into the milk-white canvas.

## Color Palette

### The Editorial Scale

The palette rejects artificial warmth (no `w3-sand` or beige) in favor of stark milk-whites, soft newspaper greys, and deep ink-navy. All classes lean on standard W3.CSS logic, supplemented by precise typesetter values.

```css
/* Backgrounds (The Paper) */
.w3-white             /* Main canvas background (#ffffff) - Milk-White */
.w3-light-grey        /* Structural zones, image grid grounds (#f1f1f1) - Newsprint */
.bg-newspaper-grey    /* Soft newspaper-grey blocks for secondary text zones (#e8e8e8) */
/* STRICTLY FORBIDDEN: .w3-sand or any beige/warm paper hexes */
/* Borders & Rules (The Pencil) */
.w3-border-light-grey /* Ultra-thin structural divides (#ececec) */
.w3-border-grey       /* Pencil-grey rules for listings and menus (#9e9e9e) */
.w3-border-dark-grey  /* Heavy emphasis lines or footer bounds (#616161) */
/* Typography (The Ink) */
.text-ink-navy        /* Headings, primary titles (#0f172a / w3-text-dark-blue adapted) */
.w3-text-dark-grey    /* Standard body copy, descriptions (#333333) */
.w3-text-grey         /* Muted bylines, timestamps, modest captions (#757575) */
/* Accents (The Typesetter & The Critic) */
.w3-blue              /* Dark w3-blue accent (#2196F3 adapted dark) - used ONLY for modest marks */
.w3-text-amber        /* Golden yellow (#ffc107) - strictly reserved for review stars */
```

## Typography

The typographic soul of the system pairs classical, elegant serif headings with highly readable, substantial serif body copy. Sans-serif is entirely avoided.

### Font Families

```css
/* Headings: Rufina, Forum, or Bellefair */
h1, h2, h3, h4, .heading-serif {
  font-family: 'Rufina', 'Forum', 'Bellefair', serif;
  color: var(--ink-navy);
}
/* Body: Vollkorn, Lusitana, or Alegreya */
body, p, .body-serif {
  font-family: 'Vollkorn', 'Lusitana', 'Alegreya', serif;
  font-size: 17px; /* Base size locked at 17-18px */
  line-height: 1.6;
}
```

### Font Size Scale & Rhythm (Compact 2014)

```css
.text-sm         /* Fine print, photo captions, tiny bylines (14px) */
.text-base       /* Standard body copy, listings descriptions (17-18px) */
.text-lg         /* Subheadings, item names in listings (20px) */
.text-xl         /* Section breaks, minor page headers (24px) */
.text-2xl        /* Secondary page titles (30px) */
.text-3xl        /* MAXIMUM HERO SIZE. Centered serif titles (36px) */
/* Anything above 3xl is strictly forbidden to prevent oversized clutter */
```

### Letter Spacing & Transforms

```css
.tracking-normal /* Standard reading rhythm for body text */
.tracking-wide   /* Used sparingly for small uppercase bylines */
.capitalize      /* Title case for menu items and section headers */
/* Uppercase is heavily restricted to avoid shouting; sentence case preferred */
```

## Animation System

### Core Philosophy: The Still Image

The interface should feel as stable as a printed broadsheet. Motion is restricted entirely to simple fades. Parallax, sliding arrays, and spring animations are strictly prohibited.

### Page Transitions (Simple Fade Only)

```html
<!-- W3 CSS standard opacity fade on load -->
<div class="w3-animate-opacity">
  <!-- Content emerges quietly -->
</div>
```

```css
/* Custom CSS equivalent for fades */
.fade-in {
  animation: fadeIn 0.4s ease-in;
}
@keyframes fadeIn {
  from { opacity: 0; }
  to { opacity: 1; }
}
```

### Hover States (No Structural Shifts)

Interaction is implied through slight contrast shifts, never through movement or lifting.

```css
/* Links and CTAs merely shift ink density */
.hover-ink:hover {
  color: #000000;
  opacity: 0.8;
  transition: opacity 0.2s ease;
}
```

## UI Components

### The 80% Newsprint Image Grid

Images do not bleed to the edges. They are constrained to a strict 80% width container, resting on a `w3-light-grey` background to evoke photographs pasted onto newsprint.

```html
<div class="w3-light-grey w3-padding-64">
  <div class="w3-content" style="max-width: 80%;">
    <div class="w3-row-padding">
      <div class="w3-half">
        <!-- Image of folded menus or cups -->
        <img src="cups.jpg" class="w3-image w3-grayscale-min" alt="Coffee cups">
      </div>
      <div class="w3-half">
        <img src="till-receipt.jpg" class="w3-image w3-grayscale-min" alt="Till receipt">
      </div>
    </div>
  </div>
</div>
```

### Typesetter's Mark (The Accent)

Instead of bullet points, a modest W3-blue square or em-dash is used to denote active states or lists.

```html
<span class="w3-text-blue w3-margin-right" style="font-size: 0.75em;">&#9632;</span>
```

### One-Column Menu Listings

Instead of cards, data is presented in a rigid, single-column list with tidy gutters, pencil-grey rules, and a steady row height.

```html
<div class="w3-container w3-white w3-padding-large">
  <div class="w3-border-bottom w3-border-grey w3-padding-16">
    <div class="w3-cell-row">
      <div class="w3-cell w3-mobile heading-serif text-lg text-ink-navy">
        Filter Coffee
      </div>
      <div class="w3-cell w3-mobile w3-right-align body-serif w3-text-dark-grey">
        $4.00
      </div>
    </div>
    <p class="body-serif w3-text-grey text-sm w3-margin-0">
      Single origin, street-facing window roast.
    </p>
  </div>
</div>
```

---

## Component Catalog

### Buttons (Paired CTAs)

Simple, text-driven, and modest. No heavy pill shapes or drop shadows.

```html
<!-- Primary CTA -->
<button class="w3-button w3-white w3-border w3-border-grey text-ink-navy body-serif hover-ink">
  Read the Menu
</button>
<!-- Secondary Paired CTA -->
<button class="w3-button w3-transparent text-ink-navy body-serif hover-ink w3-underline">
  Visit the Café
</button>
```

### Review Stars

Golden yellow asterisks or typographic stars, placed inline with text.

```html
<div class="body-serif text-base">
  <span class="w3-text-amber">&#9733; &#9733; &#9733; &#9733; &#9733;</span>
  <span class="w3-text-dark-grey w3-margin-left">An impeccable extraction.</span>
</div>
```

### Hero Section

```html
<header class="w3-container w3-white w3-center w3-padding-64">
  <h1 class="heading-serif text-3xl text-ink-navy w3-margin-bottom">
    The Morning Broadside
  </h1>
  <p class="body-serif text-base w3-text-dark-grey" style="max-width: 600px; margin: 0 auto;">
    A short description of the daily offerings, meticulously edited and served on milk-white pages.
  </p>
  <div class="w3-margin-top">
    <!-- Paired CTAs go here -->
  </div>
</header>
```

## Quality Checklist

* [ ] Is the body typography set to a serif typeface at exactly 17–18px?
* [ ] Is the hero heading strictly capped at `3xl` and perfectly centered?
* [ ] Did you completely avoid `w3-sand`, beige, or warm background colors?
* [ ] Are all rules and dividers pencil-thin (`w3-border-grey` or `w3-border-light-grey`)?
* [ ] Is the image grid constrained to 80% width sitting on a newsprint-grey ground?
* [ ] Are all UI icons, floating cards, and rounded badges completely removed?
* [ ] Did you verify that motion only uses `w3-animate-opacity` (fades) with zero parallax?
