# Snow Ledger Grey & W3-Indigo Afternoon Register

A design language for honest, table-driven hospitality and commerce interfaces.

---

## Philosophy

> "Trust is built on readable hierarchy and honest structure."

This system creates interfaces that feel like a pristine, well-maintained physical ledger or a classic, reliable 2014-era builder site. It relies on a fundamentally tabular, predictable layout that is structurally sound and explicitly unpretentious. The aesthetic thrives on owner-maintainable sections, rejecting modern fluff in favor of clear, document-ledger readability.

### Core Beliefs

1. **Trust comes from readable hierarchy** — Users need to scan information effortlessly. Predictable font sizing and steady row heights create comfort.
2. **Table-like structure** — Data and content are anchored in aligned grids, utilizing classic HTML price-table aesthetics and steady rows rather than free-floating elements.
3. **Honest photography** — Imagery must feel authentic and grounded. Show actual tea stands, white cups on counters, shopfront glass, and handwritten menus.
4. **Owner-maintainable sections** — The layout must look naturally easy to update. Components should feel like sturdy, permanent fixtures, not delicate interactive art pieces.

### Strict Rules

* **Light Navbar Only** — Navigation bars must remain w3-white or w3-light-grey to blend seamlessly with the document structure.
* **Capped Headlines** — Centered headlines must never exceed 3xl (`w3-xxxlarge`). Oversized luxury headings are strictly forbidden.
* **Short Paragraphs** — Blocks of text must be brief, highly legible, and direct.
* **Visible Star Ratings** — A cluster of golden yellow review stars must sit prominently near the hero section.
* **HTML Price Table Menus** — Menu or service sections must be styled as traditional, tightly aligned HTML price tables.
* **Ruled Location Blocks** — Contact and location data must sit inside blocks with simple, fine ruled dividers.
* **One Image Background** — Only a single background-image section is permitted per page, heavily restrained with a dark overlay to preserve text legibility.
* **No SaaS Styling** — Badges, avatars, stickers, beige backgrounds, and floating SaaS "cards" are entirely banned.

## Color Palette

### Monochromatic Ledger & W3-Indigo Scale

The foundation is built strictly on W3.CSS primitive grays, providing a pale document-ledger feel. Charcoal handles all legibility, while W3-Indigo is utilized with extreme restraint for actionable focus.

```css
/* Document Backgrounds */
w3-white             /* Main canvas, ledger pages, light navbar (#ffffff) */
w3-light-grey        /* Alternating content bands, table rows (#f1f1f1) */
/* Dividers & Structure */
w3-border-grey       /* Fine dividers, table borders, location block rules (#9e9e9e) */
w3-border-light-grey /* Secondary subtle rules for dense tables (#f1f1f1) */
/* Copy (Charcoal) */
w3-text-dark-grey    /* Primary text, paragraphs, ledger data (#333333) */
w3-text-black        /* High-contrast headlines, critical table headers (#000000) */
w3-text-grey         /* Secondary descriptions, footer text (#9e9e9e) */
/* The Accent: Dark W3-Indigo */
w3-indigo            /* Active navigation, primary CTA backgrounds (#3f51b5) */
w3-text-indigo       /* ONLY for one single social-proof line or active nav text */
w3-hover-indigo      /* Button hover states */
/* The Trust Signal: Golden Yellow */
w3-text-amber        /* Strictly reserved for review stars near the hero (#ffc107) */
```

### Social Proof Restriction

```css
/* Only one element on the page may use this combination */
w3-text-indigo w3-medium w3-center /* The single social-proof line */
```

---

## Typography

Typography pairs classic, authoritative serif headings with clean, Humanist sans-serif body copy to reinforce the honest, document-like structure.

### Font Families

```css
/* Headings */
font-family: 'Georgia', 'Times New Roman', serif;
/* Body Copy */
font-family: 'PT Sans', 'Cabin', 'Source Sans 3', sans-serif;
```

### Font Weights

```css
w3-opacity       /* Use sparingly for timestamps or table footnotes */
font-normal      /* Core body copy, table data cells */
font-bold        /* Standard heading weight, table headers, price outputs */
/* Note: Ultra-light or ultra-black weights are not permitted. */
```

### Font Size Scale (Strictly Capped)

```css
w3-tiny          /* Fine print, location block footnotes */
w3-small         /* Secondary table data, short paragraph disclaimers */
w3-medium        /* Standard body copy, menu item names */
w3-large         /* Subheadings, primary menu categories */
w3-xlarge        /* Secondary section headers */
w3-xxlarge       /* Primary section headers */
w3-xxxlarge      /* Absolute maximum size. Hero centered headlines ONLY. */
```

### Hierarchy Examples

| Element | Size (W3) | Font Family | Weight | Color | Alignment |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hero Headline | w3-xxxlarge | Serif | Bold | w3-text-black | w3-center |
| Section Title | w3-xxlarge | Serif | Bold | w3-text-dark-grey | w3-left |
| Social Proof | w3-medium | Sans | Normal | w3-text-indigo | w3-center |
| Menu Item | w3-medium | Sans | Normal | w3-text-dark-grey | w3-left |
| Menu Price | w3-medium | Sans | Bold | w3-text-black | w3-right |

## Animation System

### Core Philosophy: Fades Only

Motion must never distract from the document. There are no slides, bounces, scaling effects, or sweeps. The system relies entirely on opacity transitions.

### Page & Element Transitions

```css
/* Core W3 fade class for section entry */
w3-animate-opacity
/* CSS equivalent for custom components */
transition: opacity 0.25s ease-in-out;
```

### Micro-Interactions

Hovering over a CTA simply crossfades the background color. No elevation or drop shadows are introduced on hover.

```css
/* Button hover logic */
.w3-button {
  transition: background-color 0.2s ease-in, color 0.2s ease-in;
}
```

---

## UI Components

### Hero Star Rating

Must be visible immediately near the hero headline. Never clutter reviews with avatars or excessive text.

```html
<div class="w3-center w3-margin-bottom">
  <span class="w3-text-amber w3-large">★★★★★</span>
  <p class="w3-small w3-text-dark-grey">Based on 150+ local reviews</p>
</div>
```

### Background-Image Section (Restrained)

Only one per page is permitted. Must utilize a dark overlay to maintain complete typographic authority.

```html
<div class="w3-display-container" style="background-image: url('shopfront-glass.jpg'); background-size: cover;">
  <!-- Dark overlay to ensure ledger-white text remains crisp -->
  <div class="w3-display-middle w3-padding-64 w3-black w3-opacity-min" style="width: 100%; height: 100%;"></div>
  <div class="w3-display-middle w3-center w3-text-white w3-padding">
    <h2 class="w3-xxlarge" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Visit Our Stand</h2>
  </div>
</div>
```

---

## Component Catalog

### Menus (HTML Price Tables)

Must feature compact 2014-builder rhythm, aligned gutters, and steady row heights. Weak table alignment is a critical failure.

```html
<table class="w3-table w3-bordered w3-border-grey">
  <tr class="w3-light-grey">
    <th class="w3-text-black" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Loose Leaf Tea</th>
    <th class="w3-right-align w3-text-black">Price</th>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td class="w3-text-dark-grey">Earl Grey Reserve</td>
    <td class="w3-right-align w3-text-black w3-bold">$4.00</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td class="w3-text-dark-grey">Jasmine Pearl</td>
    <td class="w3-right-align w3-text-black w3-bold">$5.50</td>
  </tr>
</table>
```

### Location & Contact Blocks

Simple ruled details, no icons or floating "cards". Just raw, honest data.

```html
<div class="w3-border w3-border-grey w3-padding-large w3-white">
  <h3 class="w3-xlarge w3-text-black" style="font-family: Georgia, serif;">Location</h3>
  <hr class="w3-border-grey w3-margin-bottom">
  <p class="w3-text-dark-grey w3-margin-0">123 Market Street</p>
  <p class="w3-text-dark-grey w3-margin-0">Tuesday - Sunday, 8am - 4pm</p>
</div>
```

### Buttons

Strictly utilitarian. Must be `w3-indigo`. Generic blue buttons are forbidden.

```html
<!-- Primary CTA -->
<button class="w3-button w3-indigo w3-padding-large w3-hover-dark-grey transition-opacity">
  View Full Menu
</button>
<!-- Secondary Navigation Button -->
<button class="w3-button w3-white w3-border w3-border-grey w3-text-dark-grey w3-hover-light-grey transition-opacity">
  Our Sourcing
</button>
```

### Content Bands

Used to separate sections via alternating W3 primitive colors.

```html
<div class="w3-container w3-white w3-padding-64">
  <!-- Content here -->
</div>
<div class="w3-container w3-light-grey w3-padding-64">
  <!-- Content here -->
</div>
```

## Quality Checklist

* [ ] Are the main headlines strictly capped at `w3-xxxlarge` (3xl) and centered?
* [ ] Is the primary navigation bar using `w3-white` or `w3-light-grey` instead of dark colors?
* [ ] Are the review stars prominently placed near the hero and colored golden yellow (`w3-text-amber`)?
* [ ] Is there precisely *one* element serving as the single social-proof line utilizing the `w3-text-indigo` accent?
* [ ] Are menus presented in strict, rigidly aligned HTML price tables with `w3-bordered` classes?
* [ ] Does the design exclusively use opacity crossfades (`w3-animate-opacity`) rather than sliding or bouncing animations?
* [ ] Is all photography authentic (tea stands, white cups, shopfront glass, handwritten menus) and free of generic stock gloss?
* [ ] Has the layout successfully avoided all badges, avatars, stickers, beige backgrounds, and floating SaaS cards?
